KU to host scientific conference on Dec 20
Karachi: Karachi University is going to invite hundreds of scientists and
experts from all over the country to review the problems faced by the experts in
the their disciplines.
All the problems pertaining to medical as well as
veterinary sciences, animal sciences, plant sciences,
environmental-biotechnology and bioremediation, chemical sciences, physical
sciences, earth and atmospheric sciences and general sciences, will be discussed
through genomics, which is the study of gene sequences in living organisms and
being able to read and interpret them.
These views were expressed by Prof Dr
Shahana Urooj Kazmi, while talking to us on Sunday at her office. She
observed that all the disciplinary problems could be solved with the help of
strong interaction and exchange of ideas among the scientists and experts of
said subjects. Keeping in view the efficacy of the gathering of the experts at
one platform, she expressed that KU was going to hold a gathering of the
scientists at the varsity in December 2008 to concentrate on their problems,
adding that such gathering would be held under the title of the 35th All
Pakistan Science Conference on Genomics for Health and Prosperity. It is
scheduled to be held during December 20 to 23, 2008 at the KU.
Talking about
the importance of the genomics, Dr Kazmi said that the human genome had been the
biggest project undertaken to date but there were many research projects around
the world trying to map the gene sequences of other organisms. This genomic
mapping enables us to develop new preventative and therapeutic approaches to the
treatment of disease and understand the mechanics of cell biology, she said and
added that genomics was generating a lot of excitement not only in the
scientific research institutes and pharmaceutical companies but also in the
financial and insurance worlds. She said that the basic aim of the event is to
identify the difficulties in the disciplines. The conference program includes
lectures by invited speakers, workshops, and research papers/poster
presentations, covering all the major areas of science, including medical and
veterinary sciences (microbiology, biochemistry, nutrition, medicine, dentistry,
veterinary and pharmaceutical sciences), animal sciences (animal husbandry,
animal health, zoology, marine sciences, poultry and fisheries), plant sciences
(botany, agriculture and forestry), environmental biotechnology and
bioremediation, chemical sciences (chemistry -pure and applied, technology,
chemical engineering), physical sciences (pure and applied mathematics, physics,
computer sciences, space sciences and engineering sciences), earth and
atmospheric sciences (geology and geography) and general sciences (anthropology,
social sciences and education). The Nation
