Schools & colleges new academic session schedule
New academic session for schools from April and colleges from August
| Karachi, Nov 01: After receiving criticism
on its plan to start the new academic session in provincial schools and colleges
simultaneously from April 1, 2009, the Sindh Education Department is making
changes in the plan and has decided to start the session in schools from
April. |
|
The academic session of colleges of the province will commence as
usual from the month of August, said Sindh Education Department officials.
The decision of starting the session in schools
and colleges on the same date was taken at a meeting of the education
department's steering committee on October 17 which was chaired by Sindh
Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq.
The meeting was also attended by
Sindh Education Secretary Rizwan Memon, EDOs (Education) of 23 districts of the
province, Sindh Textbook Board (STBB) Chairman and heads of education boards of
Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur and Mirpurkhas.
The start of a new session
from the same date was also creating confusion between the teachers and students
as examinations of the classes IX and X were to start from March 20, 2009 and
the exams of classes XI and XII from April 28 making the session too long for
Inter students, the officials said while stating reasons for change in academic
session plan.
"It would have been very difficult for the STBB, which is
already in crisis, to prepare and publish textbooks both for the schools and
colleges during the same session," said Government Schools Teachers Association
General Secretary Muhammad Aslam.
He said that students of governments
schools were already getting the books very late and the decision of commencing
the sessions at the same time would create a problem for the college students
too.
A notification regarding the change of date for the starting of
colleges will be issued in the next few days, Education department officials
said.
They said that decision was taken after interference of Haq who
received complaints from concerned stakeholders regarding confusion about the
new academic session in colleges
The Sindh Professors and Lecturers
Association (SPLA) spokesman lauded the decision of the department for
separating the academic session of schools and colleges. "There are already a
number of problems in colleges and adding to them is not an option," he
added.
It may be pointed out that the date of starting academic session
was changed from April 1 to August 16 during the previous regime without
consulting the stakeholders. Since the independence of the country, the academic
session of Sindh used to start from April 1 every year. Daily Times
