Scant knowledge of English
Karachi: A trend of rote-learning, and some students' habit of
regurgitating pre-learned answers which may or may not be related to the
actual questions asked in the exam is responsible for the delay in the
submission of results of the B.A (Optional) English paper by the lecturer at the
University of Karachi (KU) English department to the university's examinations
department, sources informed. The answer scripts of the Optional
English paper, according to a teacher from the department, were checked by a
lecturer, Ibtesam Afreen, and submitted to the examinations department through
the proper channel. The pass percentage was very low, because the students had
scant knowledge of basic English, and their answers were completely
wrong. After a while, Afreen was summoned by a high-ranking official of
the Examinations Department and asked to increase the marks of some candidates;
she declined. Annoyed, the official sent a request to KU Vice-Chancellor (VC)
Prof. Dr Pirzada Qasim, requesting him to ask the English department to increase
the marks of the students because the pass percentage was extremely low. The VC
directed the former chairman of the department, Prof. Kaleem Raza Khan, to
recheck the scripts and report the finding to him. Prof. Khan checked the
copies and found that Afreen had checked the copy correctly and there was no
need to increase any marks. In his reply to the VC, Prof. Khan mentioned this
fact and also related his observations about the answers from the students. He
informed the VC that in the preceding year and for the last six years the
examiners were very lenient in marking. The same hue and cry had ensued when
another teacher from the English department had checked the papers. Prof. Khan
said that his department was striving to maintain a high standard of English
Literature education, and will not pass the students for writing 'something' in
a good handwriting. Sources informed that most of these candidates
had "memorised answers to 'possible' exam questions" and even though their
expected questions were nowhere to be found in the paper, they went ahead and
wrote the answers that they had learnt. Moreover, instead of providing critical
analysis of a poem or passage, students paraphrased, it without showing any
understanding of it. Another source confided that English Optional was
taught in eight colleges of Karachi and its marks are helpful in getting wattage
for admission in MA (Previous) class at the Department of English. "We have some
students who sneaked into our department through these marks (English Optional)
but their knowledge of English was rudimentary. They are not fit to be studying
English Literature," he said angrily. The news

SMIC faculty to protest KCCI proposal
Karachi: The Sindh Madressatul Islam College (SMIC) faculty will protest
if the college is commercialised, the SMIC administration said on Wednesday, in
response to news items regarding the "adoption" of the college by the Karachi
Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). The Quaid's alma mater has
played a historic role in modern education for the past 124 years, they said.
The SMIC faculty members have also requested the President and the Prime
Minister of Pakistan to take notice of such moves. The SMIC
administration said that the institution was upgraded to the level of college in
1943 by its old alumnus, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. Later, this status
was "snatched" from it, they said. It was reinstated to the level of college in
1994 because of the efforts of its principal Dr Mohammad Ali Shaikh, the SMIC
administration said. In 1974, the then-prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto
transferred control of the SMI from the Sindh government to the federal
education ministry, on the grounds that the SMI was considered a national
heritage. Today, about 1,600 male and female students are study at the
SMIC, from class one to intermediate. The institute has three modern computer
laboratories, science laboratories, a Jinnah Museum, the Hassanally Effendi
Library, a fine arts gallery, and other modern facilities, and is "considered
one of the best public sector institutions of the country," they further
said. The KCCI should first make non-functional schools operational, if
it wishes to play any role in the education sector in Sindh, the SMIC
administration said, adding that there are around 1,300 non-functional schools
in Pakistan; 700 of them are in Sindh alone. The KCCI can also set up new
institutions in the outskirts of Karachi, instead of "trying to deface the
historic institution" by "trying to convert it into a commercial complex," they
said.

College student shot dead by robbers
Karachi: A BCom student were gunned down on Wednesday allegedly
by bandits when the victim resisted robbery attempt, police officials and witnesses said.
The first incident took place near Kamran Chowrangi in the
Gulistan-i-Jauhar area in the small hours of Wednesday, when a young student was
killed while chasing three alleged bandits who had snatched a mobile phone from
his teenaged nephew. Though the exact reason behind the murder of
20-year-old Amjad Hussain remained mysterious for hours as the Gulistan-i-Jauhar
police insisted that it was the result of a personal enmity, the factual
position emerged when the family of the victim came up with the incident's
details. "My 14-year-old nephew was returning home after visiting an
area shop," Jameel Hussain, the victim's elder brother said. "When he was
very close to home some three persons riding two motorbikes pulled up next to
him and relieved him of his mobile phone at gunpoint. The boy rushed into the
house and broke the news to his maternal uncle and my younger brother, Amjad."
As Amjad hurried out of home, said Mr Hussain, he saw all the three
bandits at the corner of the street. He ran after them and finally caught up
with them. "One of the bandits, Abbas, is well known in the area for his
criminal activities and my brother recognised him," he said. "After an exchange
of hot words, Abbas opened fire on my brother with his TT pistol. My nephew was
also there, who kept pleading with his uncle to return home and not to quarrel
with the bandits, but after the firing the boy ran back home and narrated the
story." Amjad, who died on the spot after sustaining four bullets in his
chest and abdomen, was a BCom (final) student of the National College.
His body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, and after
medico-legal formalities, the Gulistan-i-Jauhar police registered a case (FIR
476/2009) under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 212 (harbouring offender)
of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) against Abbas on the complaint of Jameel
Hussain, the victim's elder brother. The news
