NWFP Schools reopen with low attendance
Peshawar: Security fears kept attendance in schools thin as
educational institutes in the province reopened on Monday after two
weeks' closure. It was observed that there were no proper
security arrangements as only an unarmed watchman usually guarded the
main gate. Different leading private schools in the city remained
closed. Attendance in government and private educational
institutes remained around 50 per cent, sources in the education
department said. The attendance, they added, might continue to be
low for a week. Keeping in view the thin presence of students, most
of the teachers avoided taking classes. "Had I taught a chapter of
Urdu or English, most of the students not present would have missed it," said teacher. When
asked about security measures, a teacher on the condition of anonymity
said how an unarmed watchman could protect a school. A student
of a college on the Wazir Bagh Road said there were no security
personnel at the college gate. Only a watchman was present at the gate,
he said. Representatives of educational institutes have
complained that the government has imposed restrictions on charging
money from students for security purposes and also eluded itself from
the responsibility, putting them in a difficult situation. The
government had asked school managements to hire private guards, buy
scanners, metal detectors and Kalashnikovs for watchmen and keep an eye
on visitors, especially burqa-clad women. Owners of private institutes
said they had no resources to make such arrangements on their own. Owners
and administrators of different educational institutes of the district
informed on Monday that they had conveyed to officials concerned that
a majority of them were not able to purchase costly scanners, metal
detectors and weapons. It is learnt that the price of cheap
scanners is between Rs100,000 to Rs150,000 and after including the cost
of two Kalashnikovs per school the security arrangements could cost an
institute more than Rs250,000. Besides, the school owners
said, they would also have to pay salaries to trained watchmen because
the existing security staff was not capable of handling arms. It was
noticed that only the schools and colleges run by the
PAF and the army had made necessary security arrangements. District Police Officer Mohammad Ayub on Monday visited
different government and private educational institutes and checked the
security arrangements. He met heads of schools and assured
them that the district police would provide them with support in
ensuring security of educational institutes. He asked the
administrators to be vigilant and inform local police immediately about
the presence or movement of suspected persons in the surroundings of
their institutes. Dawn

Call to solve CMS teachers genuine demands
Lahore: Liaquat Baloch, secretary general, Jamaat e Islami, has urged
the Punjab government and the Education department to solve the genuine
problems of the Central Model School Teachers on priority basis to
upkeep the dignity of the teaching community. In a press statement
issued here Monday, he said that the continuing protest by the teachers
and the students of the Central Model School against the injustice with
the teachers and registration of cases was a source of unrest among the
public as well. The reputation of the institution was being damaged and
the studies of the students were suffering due to closure of the
school. He stressed that the genuine demands of the teachers be
accepted and their transfer orders be withdrawn to resolve the issues
amicably. He suggested that the Punjab Education Minister should
personally visit the institution as a goodwill gesture.
