Moot on American Studies at Quaid-i-Azam University
Islamabad, Oct 26: Rais Ahmad Khan Memorial American Studies Conference being
organised by Area Study Centre for Africa, North and South America, Quaid-i-Azam
University, is starting here today (Friday) at the Earth Sciences
auditorium.
The three-day 10th conference this year is dedicated to Dr
Rais Ahmad Khan, the founder director of the centre who died last year. Dr Rais
who also served in the Foreign Office had a PhD from California University at
Berkley and was a dedicated, committed and paternal figure and all the old
students, faculty and staff take him in high esteem and recall him with
nostalgia. The auditorium at the ASC was dedicated to him when the centre moved
to its new location in the Shahdara Campus some years ago.
Dr
Atta-ur-Rahman, Chairman Higher Education Commission, will inaugurate the
conference while the Canadian High Commissioner will be the chief guest in the
closing session on Sunday, which will be held at a hotel for security
reasons.
Dr Rukhsana Qamber, the Director, and Dr Noman Sattar, Assistant
Professor of the Centre, are moving spirits behind the conference.
Every
year the conference brings together experts on the Western Hemisphere and
scholars from the region and beyond to discuss themes like American history and
culture, politics, society and literature.
Lately there is more interest
in Americas foreign relations and bilateral relations. The conference generates
considerable interest among academics, policy-makers and students. Students of
literature get an opportunity to meet and hear scholars speak about different
themes and trends of American literature.
This year's conference has
already generated a lot of interest in academic circles. Besides scholars coming
from Pakistani academic institutions, students from local universities and Azad
Kashmir are also participating. The News
