GCU revises academics' salary package
LAHORE, Oct 21: The Government College University (GCU) Lahore vice
chancellor (VC) has announced the revised salary package for the faculty on the
Tenure Track System.
According to a press release issued by GCU on
Saturday, now an assistant professor will receive Rs 80,000, associate professor
Rs 120,000 and professor Rs 180,000 a month. The new package will be applicable
from September 2007.
The VC said the academics were paid off well and
that in response high salary package should meet the university's high
expectations. He urged the teachers to substantially contribute to develop a
research culture and donate to the university's Endowment Fund.
GCU
Chemistry Department chairman Prof Dr M Akram Kashmiri said the tenure track
system was introduced to the university in 2004. He said that previously an
assistant professor was paid Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000, an associate professor Rs
72,000 and a professor Rs 134,000 a month.
Tenure Track System: The
Higher Education Commission introduced the Tenure Track System according to
which an academic does not hold a permanent position but earns it on the basis
of research and teaching. The system is in sharp contrast to the present
situation in public universities where academics hold position on permanent
basis. The tenure track system is prevalent in the US and Western Europe. Under
the system, a teacher is appointed for three years on contract. Daily Times
