LCWU students attend classes under tents

LAHORE, Oct 19: Due to delay in the construction of a new block the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) students are attending their classes in mosques and under the tents on the university campus.

Construction of the new block was started after First Lady Sehba Musharraf had inaugurated it in 2002. After five years the construction has not been completed.

LCWU vice chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Bushra Mateen said, "In 2002 in an agreement with a construction company, Hasnain Contex, it was decided that the company will complete the construction in 2006." She said the company had not completed the construction so far. She said it was mentioned in the agreement that if the company would not complete the construction till 2006, the LCWU could stop its payment. She said the LCWU had planned to construct a postgraduate block for its 25 master's departments. She said construction of libraries, laboratories, studios, halls and an FM radio station was also in the plan.

Munir Hussain, the construction company owner, said, "The main reason for the delay is that the LCWU has not paid our Rs 9,000,000." He said the company had been negotiating with LCWU administration, but they were not showing their willingness for the timely completion of the project.

Aqsa Naz, a master's student, said, "It is difficult for us to attend our classes under tents and in the mosques."

Maira Saleem, a student, said the university had started a number of new programmes, but they did not have classrooms. Rudaba, another student, said often two classes were held simultaneously in a single classroom.

LCWU Mass Communication Department chairperson Anjum Zia said, "We know that there is a shortage of classrooms, but we still don't want to deprive thousands of students from getting admissions." He said, "Around 3,000 students have been enrolled to graduation classes, 1,000 to master's and 1,500 to intermediate, but due to lack of classrooms students are suffering." Daily Times
