Lahore Grammar School wins top position
Islamabad, Oct 31: The 10th Mahbub-ul-Haq Memorial Inter-School Debate Competition
organised by the Mahbub-ul-Haq Human Development Centre and Rajiv Gandhi
Foundation in collaboration with National University of Computer and Emerging
Sciences was held at FAST Auditorium here on Tuesday.
The topic selected
for the debate was 'Global Warming, Melting of Glaciers and Rising Sea Levels
Spell Doom for the South Asian Region: A Myth or Reality,' which was
participated by students from various schools and colleges of Rawalpindi,
Islamabad and Lahore.
Student participants who spoke in favour of the
topic said it is an alarming situation for the South Asian countries that are
endangered by the rising sea levels because of global warming, adding that these
countries should take drastic measures in order to avert this situation which is
posing a threat to their future generations.
Students speaking against
the motion said glaciers go through natural changes and there is nothing
alarming about this situation. "This is all a speculation and myth and has
nothing to do with reality. We react to extremism at once and leave common sense
behind ignoring the search for truth," said one of the students speaking against
the motion.
Sahibzada Yaqoob Khan, the chief guest on the occasion, said
he was deeply touched by the substance used in favour and against the topic.
"The manner in which their opinions were executed was superb. The students
through their thoughts have left a great impact on the minds and instigated us
to review the situation with a different perspective," he said.
Judges
for the competition included Dr. Essa Daudpota, Dr. A H Nayyar, Arif Alahuddin
(UNDP) and Arshad Mahmud (NUML).
The participating schools in the
Inter-School Debate Competition were Aitchison College; Alta Vista College;
