Post-graduate admissions at KU a mess
Karachi, Oct 20: The University of Karachi (KU) has failed to entertain hundreds
of prospective MPhil/PhD applicants, because it is unable to adopt new methods
required by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for their admissions. The
Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR), responsible for admitting and
channelling research students through their degrees, has been flooded with about
1,000 requests for admissions submitted in October 2006.
Prof Pirzada
Qasim, vice chancellor (VC) of the university, earlier informed, that
the HEC and KU both wanted to enhance the standard of the MPhil/PhD research and
were not willing to accept sub-standard synopses (research proposals) from the
prospective students. "It was not possible for the students to get admission for
research after submitting superfluous and ambiguous synopses, which would only
be unimportant additions. We want to curb this phenomenon. The PhD studies
should be of the highest standards. There will be no compromise on the
standards," said Prof Qasim
An official in the BASR statement partly
negated the VC's statement. The official, on the promise of anonymity, revealed
that the university had no clear guidelines for new admissions, and that is why
the university is dragging its feet. "The think-tanks of the university
envisaged new ways that were often not communicated to the prospective students.
They wanted to teach research methods to the students and charged Rs1,000 for
the exercise. Students obliged by enrolling for classes but they continue to
wait for admissions," he confided.
It is a painful wait for the students
of Arts, Islamic Learning, Pharmacy and Science faculties, though different
institutes in the university have initiated the admission process for research
students. The HEC has asked KU and other universities to employ the Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) for the prospective students in subjects of their
choice. The university is unable to initiate this programme, which is known to
the officials, but they are tight-lipped and remain elusive when asked about the
reason for such delays.
A notification issued by the BASR in the first
week of October 2006 said that the "Board of Advance Studies and Research (BASR)
has announced that admission process for the new intake for MPhil/PhD, MS and MD
will begin from October 16 and go on till November 15, 2006. The BASR will
receive the forms in its office on the first floor of the administration
building on these dates.
"Students, who are interested in taking the
courses, are advised to apply with the prescribed forms with all the relevant
documents including a synopsis and abstract of their topic of research. The
admission will be finalised after the student clears the GRE, held by the
university on a date which will be announced later."
The recently held
meeting of the BASR, which continued for several days, concluded without forming
a consensus on the new admissions. According to a professor who attended the
meeting, the participants were clueless and there was lukewarm response from the
VC and other officials at the meeting. "It seemed as if they were least
interested in finalising the admission process. The apathy was disheartening to
those (participants) who wanted to offer highest learning to the students but
the indecision from the fathers of the university sealed their lips," he
lamented.
Dr Muhammad Shamsuddin, dean, faculty of Arts, said that the
admission process was going fine albeit at a slow pace, because of the
university's desire to admit students with standard synopses. "We are receiving
research proposals and after being scrutinised by the concerned departments and
the supervisors, the acceptance letters will be ready in a few days. We are one
of the best universities in the country and we would like to enhance our
standards. The recipient of PhD degree from our university must be in the league
of the best scholars," he asserted.
Other reasons cited by well-informed
sources in the university say that the BASR has failed to adopt the new rules
and regulations demanded by the HEC. The inaction and the wait-and-see attitude
of the university's fathers has brought about this imbroglio while the students
continue to suffer. The News
