Punjab University forms committee to probe teacher-bashing

LAHORE, Oct 9: The Punjab University (PU) administration has formed a committee to deal with the recent incident of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) workers manhandling a political science teacher.

Some IJT workers had thrashed Rana Ejaz, a teacher at the Political Science Department, when he had denied them permission for making political speeches in his lecture.

PU registrar Dr Naeem Ahmed Khan said that he had formed a committee to look into the matter after he had received an application for this purpose. He said the IJT workers were damaging the dignity of the institution. He said the PU administration was aware of the problems the IJT was creating in the varsity. He said the administration would meet on Tuesday (today) to discuss the issue of the teacher's manhandling and the recent incidents of on-campus thefts. He said some people were hiding in the PU hostels in the garb of students. He said they were politicising the IJT.

Dr Ambreen Javed, head of the Political Science Department, said that more than a dozen IJT workers had thrashed Ejaz to pressure him when he was giving a lecture to new students. She said the IJT had wanted a political function to show the newcomers their influence.

She said all the faculty members of the department had written to PU acting vice chancellor Dr Arif Butt and PU registrar Dr Naeem Ahmed Khan to stop the IJT's hooliganism. She said the IJT's presence made the teachers and students feel insecure at the PU.

A Political Science Department teacher said that IJT workers frequently threatened teachers. He said that previously, IJT nazim for the PU Law College Muhammad Zakaullah and his friends had threatened a female teacher, Khujista Rehan, after which she stopped going to the university and applied for leave. He said no action had been taken on the issue.

PU IJT nazim Muhammad Ayub said parents of some new students had complained that their daughters were misbehaved with in the name of ragging.

He said the IJT would not let anyone humiliate any female students. Daily Times
