New admission policy for medical colleges
New admission policy for medical colleges announced
Karachi, Oct 11: The Sindh government announced on Saturday the new policy for
admissions in medical colleges of the province, under which 30
reciprocal seats between Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS),
Karachi and other medical universities and colleges of Sindh have been
cancelled and 45 unilateral seats for students of other districts have
been allowed in DUHS. Sindh Health Department has issued an
official notification regarding new allocation of medical seats after
Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah approved a summary in this regard.
Sindh Health Minister Dr Saghir Ahmed had assured the Sindh Assembly
members on last Friday that the new admission policy would be announced
soon. Provincial Health Secretary Hashim Raza Zaidi
said that under the new allocation of medical seats some 20 students,
10 girls and 10 boys each, from the DUHS would get admissions in
Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences, Jamshoro and the
newly established, People Medical University, Benazirabad (Nawabshah).
The female students would be sent to Nawabshah, he added. Responding
to a question, he said that prior to the new allocation of medical
seats there were 30 reciprocal seats between DUHS and other
universities and colleges of the province. But now, he added, there
would be no reciprocal seats. He said that the newly allowed
45 seats in DUHS for students of other districts of Sindh would be
distributed in its two colleges, the Liaquat Medical College and the
Sindh Medical College. According to an official handout issued
from the Chief Minister's House, out of 45 seats, 12 seats have been
allocated for students of Hyderabad Board and 11 seats each for
students of Sukkur, Larkana and Mirpurkhas boards. All seats will be
filled on merit-cum-choice basis, it added. According to a
handout, distribution and allocation of seats for four education boards
have been made under the 1998 Census. Another handout issued from the
Sindh Health Department stated that the district-wise allocation of
seats has been revised as per the 1998 population in compliance with
the orders of the Sindh High Court, Sukkur bench, and after the
approval of the competent authority, the chief minister. It is
pertinent to mention here that both major coalition parties of Sindh,
PPP and MQM, had discussed the matter at their core committee's
meetings for a couple of days, and finally reached an agreement
recently. The delay in the announcement of the decision had
invited criticism from the Sindh-based political groups. The
provincial health minister had rejected their criticism, saying
that they were trying to play politics on the issue. Daily times

Mobile snatching outside KU gate on the rise
Karachi: The incidents of mobile snatching outside the Silver Jubilee
Gate, University of Karachi (KU), are on the rise, creating panic and
harassment among the male and female students. The area police
seem to be helpless to counter the situation, while the higher
authorities are also not paying attention towards atrocities with the
students. The students studying in the evening programmes said
that mobile snatching was usually committed after 8pm outside the KU
gate. Many students had been deprived of their cash, cell phones and
other valuables during the last six months while waiting for the buses
at the bus stop just opposite the Silver Jubilee Gate. Most of
such incidents remain unreported to the police as students are
reluctant to go to the police due to the complicated procedure of
filing FIRs and other threats. Naimish, a female student of
Chemistry Department (evening programme) said that she and her friend
were deprived of their hand bags containing cash and two cell phones by
a gang of robbers at gunpoint at the bus stop near KU gate last Tuesday. A
student said that such incidents had become a routine crime at this
deserted area. The police department should deploy heavy contingent of
their force along the KU road so as to secure life and properties of
students, said a student. It is pertinent to mention here that
the affected area plunge into darkness usually after sunset due to fault in streetlights.
