Punjab government shelved two Punjab university IT projects
Lahore: Setting aside the approved PC1s, the Punjab government has
shelved the two vital IT projects of Punjab University, an IT Park and
multipurpose block at the new campus of Punjab University College of
Information Technology. The projects were conceived to establish
linkages for a holistic approach to develop both the industry and IT
education in the country. In the first phase, the PU had allocated a
piece of 25 acres of land for the IT Park and another plot of same size
for the second and final phase behind the SUPARCO installations in the
vicinity of New Campus for these projects. The IT Park required an
amount of Rs 64 million with the Punjab government to provide Rs 73.9
million for the block. However, the government failed to allocate the
funds in the budget perhaps due to financial constraints. The
ambitious project have been abandoned at a time when Pakistan is in the
preliminary stage of IT education and software industry whereas the IT
bubble had burst in Western world at least a decade back. That is why,
the IT sector required vigorous government support to flourish and
bloom. In this scenario, Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB),
designed to promote IT, is neither enough nor has accomplished anything
worthwhile so far. Abandoning these projects is the second blow to
promotion of industry in the country after the Punjab government
scratched the idea of Women IT University at the premises of 7-Club
Road that was an ambitious programme of women empowerment and bringing
them in the mainstream. It could have been constructed at any other
location in case it was not possible at the proposed site to provide
more opportunities of job-oriented education to the female students.
