Vice chancellors meeting decided to open universities soon
Lahore, Oct 24: Governor Salman Taseer chaired a meeting of
vice-chancellors of all public universities of Punjab to review security issues
of institutions. Speaking on the occasion, the governor said bold
decisions were needed for better and secure future of the youth. He said a few
extremists could not terrify the nation. He said closure of universities
was not a solution as it would demoralise students. He said the war on terrorism
was a long war but the problem would be dealt with the support of the nation.
Taseer said that teachers should create awareness among students about
the evil designs of terrorists who were trying to destabilize the country. He
said motivation would boost confidence of students. Vice-chancellors
briefed the meeting on security measures at their respective institutions. The
meeting unanimously decided to open universities very soon. The governor
directed VCs to enhance their present security system immediately. All
universities would have independent security department headed by a chief
security officer. The chief security officers and security guards should
preferably be ex-servicemen. Recruitments of security staff should be made as
early as possible. It was decided that security staff should be
well-equipped and well-trained to face any critical situation. Walkthrough gates
should be installed at entrances of universities. All students, teachers
and other staff members would display their identity cards and no one would be
allowed to enter the university without cards. Parking lots should be away from
the main building of universities. The governor assured VCs that the
government will provide all possible assistance to enhance the security of
universities. He said the Punjab government would establish a command
and control cell to ensure foolproof security for universities. Chief
security officers and cell in charge would devise effective security policy
through close liaison and share intelligence report in order to avert any
untoward incident, he said. The governor also directed the Punjab
government to provide foolproof security to universities. IB Joint
Director General Ijaz Akram, DIG (Operation) Punjab Police Muhammad Rafiq Butt,
DIG (CID) Aftab Ahmed Cheema, DIG (Special Branch) Faisal Shahkaar, Addl
Secretary Higher Education Akram Chaudhry and Addl Secretary Home Osman Anwar
attended the meeting.

PU discussed ways to increase PhD teachers
Lahore: Punjab University Vice-chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran called a
meeting of non-PhD faculty members as part of the university's campaign to
increase number of PhD teachers, According to a press release issued on
Friday, the VC motivated teachers to get admission to foreign varsities as soon
as possible. He said non-PhD teachers should benefit from this
opportunity and apply for HEC scholarships, Chevening scholarship, Erasmus
Mundus scholarship and other scholarships. The VC said out of total 634
regular teachers, only 204 were PhDs with a 32 percentage and the PU was trying
to increase this number. The VC urged teachers to get admission to
varsities of China, Germany, Malaysia, Russia, Sweden and other countries where
higher education was comparatively less expensive as compared to US and UK. He
said special attention was also being paid on strengthening the local PhD
programme. Teachers currently doing PhDs in PU had been offered to do
research in foreign varsities. Earlier, Pro-Vice-chancellor Dr Jamil
Anwar Ch motivated young teachers to benefit from this scheme.
