Future of hundreds of students at stake
Islamabad: Due to the nasty politicking between the high ups of the
Ministry of Information Technology the future of hundreds of students is
at stake studying on the Ministry's scholarships and dozens of research
projects are at standstill. Just because the Board of Directors
of the Information and Communication Technologies Research and
Development (ICT R&D) Fund could not meet, the funds could not be
released to the students studying on scholarships in various local
universities and for research projects initiated by the fund. The
Ministry has also failed to appoint a permanent Chief Executive Officer
of the ICT R&D Fund, and acting CEO Mushtaq Bhatti has been looking
the affairs of the fund. The Ministry had established National ICT
R&D Fund in September 2006 aimed at transforming Pakistan's economy
into a knowledge-based economy. At present, the Fund has been supporting
about 1,300 students mostly from rural and underprivileged areas in
terms of scholarships' award for four-year BS programme in IT related
disciplines. The Fund had also enabled initiation of about 40 research
sponsoring development projects for PhD students. But due to the
non-payment of funds all the projects have come to a halt and all the
investment made would go down the drain if the payments were not made.
It has been learnt that most of the students belong to very poor
families and also support their families with the stipend besides
continuing their studies. The students have been studying in different public and private
universities such as FAST University, UET Lahore, Lahore College for
Women University, National University of Science and Technology (NUST)
etc. The fund has been established taking a minimal percentage of
profits from telecom service provider companies but the amount could not
be disbursed among the respective universities and for the research
projects due to the internal politics between the high officials of the
ministry and millions of rupees have been lying in the bank uselessly
for several months. Naguibullah Malik, Secretary IT and Telecom,
said the funds could not be released because the meeting of Board of
Directors of the fund could not be held for the last six months. Now on
20th of this month the meeting is going to be held so all the issues
would be resolved. He said the universities were asked to continue the
studies of the students and the funds would be reimbursed later on. When
this scribe tried to contact Adviser to the Prime Minister on
Information Technology, Sardar Latif Khosa, his Principal Staff Officer
replied Khosa has not been interfering as he can only recommend things.
The Prime Minister is Minister In-charge of the ministry and secretary
has been handling the affairs and directly reporting to the PM. The nation

Students lock BMC offices in protest
Bannu: Students of the Bannu Medical College (BMC) have been protesting
since May 13 in Bannu, Peshawar and Islamabad to draw the attention of
the government towards their problems. The college was established in
2006 by the former chief minister Akram Khan Durrani. It is the third
biggest public sector medical college in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The
students enrolled were selected by a joint admission committee. However,
the college has been facing problems from the start. The college lacked
hostels and other infrastructure while medical equipment was scarce in
the laboratories. The students had hoped things would get better but
that did not happen. "It is going from bad to worse," said a 4th year
MBBS student who did not want to be named, adding, the students had
contacted all politicians to get their problems solved, but in vain.
"When we met the provincial minister for health, he said half of the
people of the country had come on roads protesting for acceptance of
their demands and we the students should do the same," another student
said. The students also met the secretary for health, speaker and
deputy speaker of the provincial assembly, chief minister, chairman of
the standing committee of health in the Senate and officials of the
health department but all the meetings proved unfruitful, Muzammil Shah,
a second year MBBS student said. "We are left with no other option but
to appeal to the chief justice to take notice of the problems being
faced by the students as the future of 600 medical students is at
stake," said students Mehtab Anwar and Jamal Shahid. The news

Over 1,000 take entry test for BS at QAU
Islamabad: The Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad has received a
tremendous response for its BS four-year program as hundreds of students
appeared in entry tests from across the country. The entry test was
organised by QAU administration in university gymnasium on Friday. It
is the first time that QAU has started BS level programs to cater the
need of higher education in the country. For eighty seats of
four-year BBA program, almost 850 candidates appeared in entry test
while for 4 year BS Economics, almost 550 applicants appeared in entry

the interdisciplinary nature. The QAU, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr
Masoom Yasinzai visited the test centre and expressed satisfaction over

HEC workshop on project management
Islamabad: Higher Education Commission-Financial Aid Development (HEC-FAD) Programme, funded by the
US Agency for International Development (USAID), organized a two-day
workshop on project management for staff of students' financial aid and
university advancement/development of its 11 partner universities and
the HEC. The workshop was aimed at enhancing capacity of its
participants in understanding basic concepts and elements of project
management, specifically in the public sector in order to effectively
initiate, plan, control, and report projects to generate funds for
financial aid and advancement/development offices. Another major focus
of the workshop was to enhance the capacity of participants to develop
projects that establish and strengthen public private partnerships and
international linkages. The training was part of USAID's ongoing
efforts to strengthen the 11 partner universities and HEC by building
their capacity in fundraising strategies and implementation of financial
aid mechanisms. Over the past two years, HEC-FAD Programme has provided
technical assistance to HEC and the partner universities in
establishing free standing financial aid and university
advancement/development offices. Daily times
