Elahi opens new Beaconhouse National University's (BNU) block

LAHORE, Sep 13: Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi on Wednesday said the government was paying special attention to promoting education as it was essential for the country's development. Elahi said this at the foundation-stone laying ceremony of the Beaconhouse National University's (BNU) new block on Wednesday. BNU chairwoman Nasreen Mehmood Kasuri also addressed the function. BNU vice chancellor Sartaj Aziz, Punjab Education Foundation chairman Shahid Hafeez Kardar, Aitcheson College principal Shamim Khan and BNU Registrar Farzana Shahid were also present on this occasion.

The CM said that the education sector had been strengthened through public-private partnership. He said record funds had been spent for promoting primary, secondary and higher education under the Education Sector Reforms Programme. He said attention was being paid to developing human resource and improving infrastructure under Vision 2020. He said the Beaconhouse School System was playing an important role in providing education of international standards.

Elahi said the private sector had been neglected in the past but the present government had taken pragmatic measures for strengthening this sector, as it was also an important component in the development process of the province. He said various projects had been initiated in education and health sectors with public-private partnership for socio-economic development of the province. He said industrial zones were being set up in the Punjab with the private sector's help, which was also playing an important role in promoting education and improving health services.

Elahi said Pakistan Muslim League (PML) had given central importance to the promotion of education in its development strategy after coming to power. He said the education budget had been increased manifold. He said facilities at schools were being ensured under the Education Sector Reforms Programme. He said attendance at schools had been increased due to free education up to matriculation. Daily times
