GCU begins four new bachelor programmes

LAHORE, Sept 27: Government College University (GCU) Lahore has started new study programmes at the Bachelor of Arts Honours (BA Hon) and Bachelor of Sciences Honours (BSc Hon) level.

A press release on Tuesday stated that the Deans Committee presided over by GCU vice chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab had approved the decision. It was decided that the Departments of Mass Communications, Sociology, Education and Law would award their degrees separately. Earlier, the four departments were attached to the Department of Political Sciences, headed by Muhammad Azhar Chaudhry, under the Faculty of Arts.

GCU vice chancellor Dr Khalid Aftab said the new programmes would equip the students with skills necessary for the market. He said the detachment of the programmes would strengthen the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

He also said that after the inauguration of several new disciplines like Telecommunications, Computer Sciences, Sustainable Development Study, Mathematical Sciences, Bio-technology and Industrial Chemistry, it was necessary to start the programmes independently. The four new departments would work under the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences and would be supervised by Prof Dr Muhammad Khalid Pervaiz, he added. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences dean Prof Dr Muhammad Khalid Pervaiz thanked the vice chancellor for taking steps to promote arts and social sciences. He also said the expansion of electronic and print media in the country required an independent Department of Mass Communications to produce skilled media professionals. He said the Department of Law had been a long awaited dream, which had been achieved. Daily Times
