Polytechnic will return to Shadi Lal Building
LAHORE, Sept 24: Chief Minister (CM) Pervaiz Elahi has said that the Government
Polytechnic Institute for Women will be temporarily shifted from the Shadi Lal
Building to an adjacent new block so that the building can be renovated.
He told the teachers and students of the institute on Sunday that the
institute would not be closed down or moved permanently.
He said the
Shadi Lal Building was a national heritage and the government wanted to
rehabilitate and protect it.
He said the classrooms would be temporarily
shifted to the new block. Thirty students residing in the building would also be
temporarily moved to a nearby building, he added. "The institute's
administration will be consulted before the shifting," he said.
The CM
said a 'state of the art' library with books on technical education would be set
up in the Shadi Lal building after its renovation. More computers would also be
provided to the computer lab, he added.
Elahi said the Planning and
Development Department (P&D) had deemed the building dangerous earlier this
month. The department had also said the building required rehabilitation, he
added.
He urged authorities concerned to speed up removing encroachments
from the institute's land.
He said, "The Educational Reforms Programme
has been successful. The provision of free education at the matriculation level
and free text books have increased the literacy rate." He said the government
had given incentives to the teachers, which would solve their financial problems
and help them concentrate on their jobs.
The students of the Polytechnic
Institute for Women had been protesting against the proposed evacuation of the
Shadi Lal Building for eight days. Daily Times
