Moderation targets International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI)
ISLAMABAD, Sep 1: Gone are the days when
one used to prefer the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) because
of its separate campuses for boys and girls which is now following the agenda of
enlightened moderation of the present government gradually converting the
university into a co-education institution.
The university in this regard
has taken many steps such as starting of co-classes of boys and girls, combined
bus services and making a of swimming pool for girls at women
campus.
Official sources while requesting anonymity has revealed that the
Higher Education Commission (HEC) has allocated Rs 3.5 million to the university
for the establishment of a swimming pool and gymnasium at female
campus.
"There is a shortage of rooms at the female campus for the students
even female faculty members are facing shortage of rooms and have not enough
place for themselves. But the university is planning to build a swimming pool
and gymnasium for girls students, which we are unable to understand," one of the
faculty member alleged.
The university has started combined bus service for
boys and girls, which was once offered separately for both. Co-education system
has been introduced at the Bachelor's level in the faculty of Engineering
Technology and in the faculty of Computer Science at the Master's and PhD
level.
One of the faculty member remarked the university administration is
doing all this just to please the government and secure their seats. "The
government itself is following the American agenda so the university is also
following the footsteps of the government".
It's also worth mentioning that
the university is also planning to change its name from International Islamic
University Islamabad to Shah Faisal International University, which is creating
fear amongst the students that they may face difficulties while seeking jobs
abroad. And changing the identity can create confusions.
There are also
reports that the university is considering to close the faculty of Shariah and
Law one of the nine faculties at the university.
While the spokes person of
the university has said the students themselves are not applying for the courses
offered by this faculty otherwise the university has no plans to close the
faculty.
Misbah Saboohi, Assistant Professor Law & Shariah, was of the
view that the strength of the department has not reduced however it has divided
into different sub-courses offered at department. She agreed that the Master's
programme of Arabic Law has becoming unpopular amongst the students, as it has
lost its demand in the market. The nation
