IJT workers riot, block roads in Lahore
LAHORE, Sept 15: Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) activists on Friday blocked roads, burnt
tires and pelted stones at the police across the city against the recent
killings of their five party workers in Karachi.
Due to the protest
rallies traffic jams occurred on Lower Mall, Civil Lines Road, Wahdat Road and
Campus Road, which put not only commuters but vehicles including ambulances in
hot water. When the mob went out of control the police had to fire in the air.
The biggest protest was witnessed on the Lower Mall Road where a large
number of IJT workers burnt tires and blocked the traffic. On Wahdat Road, near
the New Campus, IJT workers offered the funeral pray for the deceased in
absentia. They blocked the road for several hours.
When the IJT workers
threw crackers at the police, the police also started firing in the air and
forced the IJT workers to clear the blockades.
Punjab University IJT
nazim Muhammad Ayub said six IJT workers have been
injured after the police fired at them.
He alleged that the All Pakistan
Muttahida Students Organization (APMSO) was behind the recent Karachi killings.
He said, "Our two workers Shabbir and Akber are in critical condition due to the
police firing."
Deputy Superintendent of Police Rana Azeem said the
police did not fire at the IJT workers. He said that the IJT workers had blocked
the roads and when police tried to clear the blockades on Campus Road and Wahdat
Road, IJT workers threw crackers at the police. He said no IJT worker has been
injured in the incident. Daily Times
