LUMHS approves Rs589m budget with Rs174m deficit

HYDERABAD, Sept 12: The senate of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) on Monday approved Rs589 million budgetary estimates for 2007-08 entailing a huge deficit of Rs174 million, which the university planned to meet through savings from vacant posts, reserved funds and government assistance.

The university's director of finance, Ahsan Ali Kehar, who presented the estimates told the meeting that the expected income for 2007-08 came to Rs589 million and estimated expenditure stood at Rs763.84 million.Mr Kehar said in answer to a question by a senate member that the deficit would be met through savings from vacant posts, university's reserved funds and expected financial assistance by the government.

He said that the university had remained well within its budgetary limits despite filling 139 vacant posts mostly in teaching cadre. The university had generated Rs558 million income as against an expenditure of Rs519 million and saved Rs39 million. Major components of expenditure comprised salaries, stipends and sundries, he added.

The meeting unanimously approved the budgetary estimates for 2007-08 and annual statement of accounts for 2006-07.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Noshad Ahmed Shaikh, who presided over the meeting after the governor of Sindh failed to turn up due to his preoccupations in Karachi, that his new administrative reforms had not only resulted in saving money but also helped instil discipline among students as well as staff.

He said that the university was saving Rs2 million a month through privatisation of transport system. The changes brought about in the admission section would result in transparency and efficiency at graduate and postgraduate level, he said.

He appreciated the efforts of principals of CMC, PMC and GMMMC and thanked the Sindh government and the Higher Education Commission for their continued support.

ADMISSIONS: Sindh Univ-ersity announced the schedule for admissions in all bachelor and master degree programmes under regular merit, self-finance and sports basis for the session 2008 here on Monday.

According to the schedule, forms would be issued to the candidates along with catalogue 2008 for admission in faculties of Pharmacy, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences Commerce and Business Administration, Education and Islamic Studies from Sept 12 to Oct 9, 2007.

The admission forms could be obtained from the branches of HBL Old Campus Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Tando Allahyar, Tando Mohammad Khan, Hala, Badin, Digri, Mirpurkhas, Dhoronaro, Sanghar, Dadu, Nawabshah, Thatta, Sukkur, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Shahdadkot, Ka-shmore, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze and Karachi.

Those candidates who have passed Intermediate examination in pre-engineering, pre-medical, general science, commerce and Humanities (Arts) groups or equivalent examinations up to 2007 with 45 per cent marks are eligible for admissions in bachelor degree programmes.

The candidates who have passed bachelors degree in relevant discipline from Sindh University or any other recognised institute, university or equivalent examinations up to 2006 with second division are eligible for admissions in Masters degree programmes.

Last date for the submission of admission forms is Oct 9.

Pre-entry test for admissions in all master degree and bachelor degree programmes would be held on Oct 21 and Nov 11, 2007 respectively, at Allama I.I.Kazi Campus Jamshoro.

The university has also advised the candidates to obtain hostel accommodation forms from the same branches, which are separately available there. Dawn
