Literacy day observed
SUKKUR, Sept. 9: The
Education and Literacy Department and District Government with the collaboration
of National Commission of Human Development (NCHD) and Human Development Society
(HDS) observed an International Literacy Day, which was held here at Zila
Council Hall on Saturday.
This
year was focused on the vital relationship between literacy and health.
On this
occasion, Zila Nazim, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah said that literacy strengthens the
capabilities of people to take advantage of healthcare and educational
opportunities adding that such as seeking medical help for themselves and a sick
child, by adopting preventive health measures such as immunization and by
acquiring greater knowledge of family planning methods.
Zila
Nazim said that the educated parents, especially mothers, whether through formal
schooling or adult programs, are more likely to send their children to school
and have a better understanding of their healthcare needs.
The
Nazim said that considerable achievements have been made in many countries and
progress has been attained through adult literacy and non-formal education
programs but he noted that there remain to be major challenges.
He
quoted that according to the official reports about 774 million adults, out of
which two-thirds are women, live without basic literacy skills throught the
world.
He said
that International Literacy Day was a timely reminder about the importance of
literacy for individuals, families, communities and whole societies.
Exicutive District Officer
(Education) Sukkur Jairam Das said that literacy is an essential basis for
improving social conditions, including health - imagine not even being able to
read a prescription bottle. That's why the present government is committed to
fully restoring funding for literacy purpose, he added.
General
Manager NCHD Sukkur, Muhammad Tahir Abassi, Chairman HDS Advocate Shakeel Ahmed
Khan, Ms Yasmin Shah and other also highlights the importance of the day.
A large number of Teachers,
Students, Parents, Notables, representatives of the various NGOs were also
