NADRA will help PU statistics students, says governor
LAHORE, Sep 4: Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid
Maqbool said on Monday the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA)
agreed to help the Punjab University (PU) College of Statistical and Actuarial
Sciences (CSAS) students in their studies.
According to a press release
issued by the Punjab University (PU), he was addressing the inaugural session of
a three-day international conference on "Statistical Data Produced an
Application of Statistics". The conference was organised by the CSAS in
collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) at Faisal auditorium.
He said, "There is a long way to go as major issues like poverty, illiteracy and
health are yet to be addressed." The Punjab government, he said, was committed
to offer quality education and it has allocated maximum resources for this
purpose. He said this year the HEC was allocating funds for several development
projects in the university. He said the Punjab government and the HEC would give
Rs 20 million and Rs 140 million to the CSAS respectively. PU vice-chancellor
Arshad Mehmood said the statisticians should stay careful while collecting data.
He said the PU was offering best education facilities and was ranked second
among 25 universities in the country. During the last six years, he said, the PU
had received only Rs 206 million development grant, while this year alone, the
university had passed Rs 2.8 billion budget.
The VC said that the PU's
incumbent management had developed seven new constituent colleges while
upgrading various institutes and raised the number of constituent colleges to
10. He said the PU had only 17 departments in 1947 and 26 new departments were
added in the last 52 years. Since 1999, he said, the present management set up
25 new departments. He said the management had inducted over 300 faculty members
on merit, enhanced students' enrolment on campus from 9,000 to 26,000 and off
campus enrolment from 150,000 to 300,000.
He said the university had
also planned to produce 100 PhDs on annual basis. He said the university's main
library had been digitalized. CSAS principal Dr Shahid Kamal, Statistical
Division secretary Asad Elahi, NADRA chairman Brig (r) Saleem Moeen and Bahria
University Prof Dr Muhammad Akram also spoke on the occasion. Daily times
