NADRA will help PU statistics students, says governor

LAHORE, Sep 4: Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool said on Monday the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) agreed to help the Punjab University (PU) College of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences (CSAS) students in their studies.

According to a press release issued by the Punjab University (PU), he was addressing the inaugural session of a three-day international conference on "Statistical Data Produced an Application of Statistics". The conference was organised by the CSAS in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) at Faisal auditorium. He said, "There is a long way to go as major issues like poverty, illiteracy and health are yet to be addressed." The Punjab government, he said, was committed to offer quality education and it has allocated maximum resources for this purpose. He said this year the HEC was allocating funds for several development projects in the university. He said the Punjab government and the HEC would give Rs 20 million and Rs 140 million to the CSAS respectively. PU vice-chancellor Arshad Mehmood said the statisticians should stay careful while collecting data. He said the PU was offering best education facilities and was ranked second among 25 universities in the country. During the last six years, he said, the PU had received only Rs 206 million development grant, while this year alone, the university had passed Rs 2.8 billion budget.

The VC said that the PU's incumbent management had developed seven new constituent colleges while upgrading various institutes and raised the number of constituent colleges to 10. He said the PU had only 17 departments in 1947 and 26 new departments were added in the last 52 years. Since 1999, he said, the present management set up 25 new departments. He said the management had inducted over 300 faculty members on merit, enhanced students' enrolment on campus from 9,000 to 26,000 and off campus enrolment from 150,000 to 300,000.

He said the university had also planned to produce 100 PhDs on annual basis. He said the university's main library had been digitalized. CSAS principal Dr Shahid Kamal, Statistical Division secretary Asad Elahi, NADRA chairman Brig (r) Saleem Moeen and Bahria University Prof Dr Muhammad Akram also spoke on the occasion. Daily times
