O' Level toppers reject extremism
LAHORE, Sept 22: Edexcel on September 10
announced the names of students who aced the O' Levels examinations held in
2007.
Edexcel is among three examination boards in the United Kingdom
that conduct the O' Levels in 100 countries.
Edexcel country manager
Sohail Zafar said, "Edexcel is an international organisation. Compared to last
year's result, this year's is much better. More students have passed and done
well." He said 30 institutions in the city were affiliated with
Edexcel.
He also said Edexcel awarded 1.5 million certificates to
students all over the world every year.
The O' Levels examinations were
held in the city from May to June. Thousands of students appeared for the exams
in the city. The results have better than last year.
We talked
to students who either topped subjects in the world or Pakistan or the
city.
Muhammad Ali
I am a student of Bloomfield Hall and
have stood first in mathematics in the world. I also topped the countrywide
physics exam. In Lahore, I topped biology and chemistry. I am satisfied with the
education system of Pakistan. A large number of students can't complete their
studies because of financial constraints. I want to do my MBBS from Aga Khan
Medical University in Karachi. I think only democracy can resolve our issues, as
dictators have done nothing for us. The way our government deals with issues has
marred the country's image.
Maryam Shahbaz
I am a student
of Bloomfield Hall. I have topped the subject of Pakistan Studies in the world.
I am satisfied with our education system. I want to become a doctor. I intend to
go abroad to complete my studies. I have no interest in politics because our
politicians haven't done anything for the country. I owe my success to hard work
and the prayers of my parents and teachers. Religious extremism is a bad thing.
There is a need for liberal people to come forward and support the
country.
Mehrunnisa Shahid
I am a student of Lahore Grammar
School, Shah Jamal branch. I have topped commerce in the city. After doing my A'
Levels, I will sit for the CSS examinations. I am satisfied with our education
system and do not want it to be modified. It is unfair for our government to
discourage O' Levels and A' Levels students. I owe my success to the prayers of
my parents and teachers. Islam is a modern religion, but some extremists are
trying to mar its image.
Ravia Saqib
I have scored the
highest in pure mathematics in Pakistan. I want to do my MBA from the Lahore
University of Management Sciences. Our education system is good and I am
satisfied with the O' Levels syllabus. Our country's politics is complicated and
a big hurdle in its progress. I do not like religious extremism. I think Islam
is a religion of peace. I am least bothered about our country's politics, but I
still want democracy to prevail in Pakistan. My success is due to my parents'
prayers.
M Ali Hassan
I study at the International School
of Choueifat and secured first position in mathematics in the world. I am
satisfied with our education system and there is no need to modify it. I want to
become a doctor and intend to go abroad for my higher studies. My teachers' hard
work and my parents' prayers made my dreams come true. I am not interested in
politics because our politicians are good for nothing. There is no room for
extremism in Islam and we should resolve our issues through dialogue.
Fatima Haider
I study at the International School of
Choueifat and have scored the highest in Urdu in the world. I am satisfied with
our education system. After doing my O' Levels I intend to do my MBA from LUMS.
I am least interested in politics. I do not like religious extremism. Those who
impose their opinion on others are not doing a great job. I want people to
tolerate others. My success is due to hard work and my parents' prayers. I love
reading books, listening to music and playing basketball.
Umar
Rashid
I study at the International School of Choueifat and have
scored the highest in economics in the city. I am satisfied with our course. Our
education system needs to be changed. I have no interest in politics and think
that the basic hurdle in our progress is our political culture. Our economy is
in the grip of our politicians. I want to do a bachelors in economics. Islam is
a religion of peace, but some people are using religion for their vested
interests. I like playing cricket and football. Daily Times
