PU VC steps down after eight years
LAHORE, Sept 22: Punjab University (PU) vice chancellor
(VC) Lt Gen (r) Arshad Mehmood will leave the PU today (Saturday) after spending
eight years in office.
He will be replaced by acting VC Prof Muhammad
Arif Butt. On Friday, Mehmood spent his last day at the campus. A large number
of PU employees bade him farewell at a party. The VC announced Rs 3,000 and Rs
2,000 special allowances for PU grade one to five and grade six to 17 employees
respectively as a token of appreciation. He also announced a Rs 1,000 allowance
for PU drivers and conductors from the university's special funds.
A
lobby of teachers criticised the package, saying the Higher Education Commission
had already cut the grants for the university over the plagiarism issue. Islami
Jamiat Talaba members distributed pamphlets after Friday prayers, levelling
several allegations on the VC. "The VC ran the university like an army
institution," the pamphlets read.
PU registrar Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan
denied the pamphlets contained any allegations against the VC. "I saw a
pamphlet. It did not mention any person's name," he said. He said the number of
faculties had been increased from nine to 13, and added that several development
projects were underway at the university. Dr Arif Butt will assume charge of VC
from September 24 (Monday) and hold the office until the VC search committee
appoints a permanent VC, Dr Khan said. Daily Times
