Protesters block Bund Road after truck kills PU student

LAHORE, Sep 13: People blocked Bund Road for almost three hours after a truck ran over a Punjab University student at Sanda Mor early on Wednesday. The accident took place in Sanda police precinct.

Ehsaan Arshad of Amin Park (house number 35, street number 1, Kareem Block) was doing his Industrial Engineering Management (IEM) from PU's Chemical Engineering Department. He left his house with his sister Sadia on his motorbike (LXW-1620) to drop her off to work and then ride to school when the truck smashed into the bike.

Sadia jumped off right before the accident, but Ehsaan could not and came under the large vehicle. He died instantly.

The driver tried to get away, but people standing around caught him and gave him to the police. The driver has been arrested and his vehicle impounded.

People living in the area started demonstrating against the truck driver, city government and police. They also stoned vehicles crossing the area and later blocked Bund Road.

They said such accidents were common and many people had died at the same spot. They also said they had complained to authorities, but no action had been taken.

Rana Mansoorul Haq, superintendent of police (Iqbal Town Division), said people around Sanda had protested peacefully for about an hour and a half. He said the protestors had demanded making the road one way, as the dual carriageway was prone to lots of accidents. He also claimed that no tyres were burned and protestors did not stone vehicles.

He said he had written to the nazim and district coordination officer to take action in this regard. He said he had also formed a committee of eight to 10 people to help in making a specific stretch of the road one way. Daily times
