PU teachers slam governor's 'unnecessary interference'
LAHORE, Sep 1: Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) on
Friday denounced Chancellor/Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool for what it
called 'unnecessary interference' in routine affairs of the Punjab University
(PU). According to a press release issued by the PUASA, PUASA president Dr
Mumtaz Ahmed Salik while speaking to PUASA executive committee meeting said due
to the chancellor's 'interference' in the PU matters teachers' problems
increased. He said the chancellor had abolished seats for employees' children.
He said it was not fair that the chancellor had ordered teachers to switch to
the lounges from their rooms. He said the chancellor had rejected the decision
of PU statutory bodies, which was an unconstitutional act. He said the
chancellor should take back his decisions otherwise the PUASA would wear black
armbands on his (governor) arrival in the PU.
The PUASA members hailed the
Lahore High Court for directing PU administration to give admission to 18
students of BA/BSc (Hons) in MA/MSc without taking entry test through the
National Testing Service. He said the Lahore High Court should take suo-moto
action of admission to other programmes like BA/BSc (Hons), MA/MSc and admission
to medical colleges and engineering universities through the entry test. The
meeting observed that the entry test system was implemented forcefully. The
meeting also observed that there was dire need to free the nation from this
'illegal', 'unethical', 'cruel' and 'exploitative' system. He said through
abolishing entry test system students belonging to poor families could also be
able to get admission in higher education institutions.
PU registrar Dr Naeem
Khan said that Khalid Maqbool being a chancellor was part of the PU and
it was his (governor) right to take part in the PU matters. He said due to the
personal interest of the chancellor a record budget of Rs 2,880 million has been
approved for the PU. He said, "The chancellor 'hard work' for the development of
the PU should be appreciated." He said whenever the chancellor would visit the
PU, he (chancellor) would be given a red carpet welcome. He said that no quota
of the PU employees' children had been abolished. He said, "We are giving
admissions to employees' children according to the previous policy." Daily times
