PMA slams private medical college at LGH
LAHORE, Sep 1: The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Lahore
office-bearers condemned the Punjab government for an alleged plan to lease a
piece of land adjacent to Lahore General Hospital (LGH) to the Centre for
International Medical Education (CIME) for establishing a private medical
college.
Addressing a press conference held at the PMA house, PMA
office-bearers showed the copies of the draft sent to the Law Department for
giving a final shape to the agreement. They condemned the Punjab government for
leasing the assets of the LGH, including buildings, medical equipment and
furniture, for 30 years.
PMA office-bearers said they would siege the
LGH board of management if the assets were handed over to the foreign company.
They said, "We will stage a sit-in at the LGH along with doctors if the company
will try to come in the LGH." They said the PMA would soon file a lawsuit
against the government and would send a legal notice to the CIME.
PMA
office-bears alleged that the lease contract did not mention the amount for the
contract and that the CIME was authorised to extend the agreement. They said the
chief minister had recently announced to establish a public medical school here
but the new school would be a private institute. They said under the contract
the Punjab government was obliged to award the university status to the private
medical college.
A senior official, requesting anonymity, said that the Punjab government was going to sign an agreement with an American
company to manage the assets of the LGH and to establish a private medical
college. Daily times
