Punjab teachers found not guilty of treason
LAHORE, Sep 7: Education secretary Khalid Ikhlaq Gillani on Thursday
acquitted Punjab Professors and Lecturers Association (PPLA) president Nazim
Hasnain and Lahore PPLA president Prof Majid Wazeer on charges of 'conspiracy'
and 'rebellion' against the government. He gave instructions to withdraw
show-cause notices against the teachers.
The PPLA in a press release on
Thursday thanked the bar councils, civil society, the Human Rights Commission of
Pakistan, the Khaksar Tehreek and non-governmental organisations for their
support. The PPLA vowed to carry on its movement to safeguard the teachers'
rights across the province. In order to meet the challenges, the PPLA said, it
would work for the improvement of the education standards.
On September
3, the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) had sent a legal notice to the
Education secretary to pay Rs 250 million for issuing show cause notices to the
teachers for participating in the lawyers' movement. Assistant Professor Majid
Wazeer and Assistant Professor Nazim Hasnain have been teaching political
science at Shalamar College Baghbanpura and Islamia College Railway Road
respectively. Daily times
