Students flee after armed clash at SU

JAMSHORO, Sept 27: At least 11 students of the Sindh University were injured in an armed clash between two groups of students here on Tuesday evening. Police arrested 10 students affiliated to various wings.

The clash occurred after an exchange of hot words between the two student groups. Both sides used arms, bricks and sticks freely, injuring Zaid Brohi, Muhammad Zain, Shamshad, Shabbir Ahmed Palejo, Abdul Razzaq, Sajin Brohi and others.

Later, the students clashed again at the International Hostel but no one was injured in that incident.

All the injured were shifted to the LUMH, Jamshoro. Police have registered a case against 20 students, and made 10 arrests so far.

All academic activities came to a halt as students were seen fleeing the university in panic.

Later, heavy contingent of police led by DPO KK Memon arrived at the university and the

situation was brought under control.

Talking to newsmen, the students held the university administration responsible for the troubling situation and alleged that these groups were being patronised by the administration.

Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor Mazhar-ul-Haq chaired a meeting to review the overall situation.

The meeting was attended by Jamshoro DPO KK Memon, University Registrar Saleh Rajar, Director Admission Agha Riaz Pathan and other officials in which key decisions were taken to control law and order on the university premises.

The police were directed to take stern action against students vitiating the university atmosphere.

Sources said the meeting witnessed the university administration and police making counter allegations against each other for failing to maintain peace in the university.

Meanwhile, it was decided to beef up security and more police pickets would be set up to check miscreants. Furthermore, no student will be allowed to enter the university premises without proper identification.

Adeel Pathan adds from Hyderabad: Vice Chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui visited the neurosurgery ward of the Liaquat University Medical Hospital, Hyderabad and enquired after the health of Irfan Mirzani, an student of the 2nd year of Centre of Pure and Applied Geology, who had received head injury during the clash.

He also talked to ward in charge Dr Wasdeve, who said that the students will be discharged within a few days. The university Registrar also accompanied the vice chancellor.

However, dozens of students of different universities under the banner of Awami Tehrik student wing staged a protest demonstration outside the press club here and demanded an end to terrorism on the campuses and strict action against the administration. The News
