'Teachers rejected call for boycott'
LAHORE, Sept 20: The boycott of classes in public universities on the
call of the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations
(FAPUASA) was not successful in the city.
FAPUASA announced, On September
16, the countrywide boycott, but five universities in the city had rejected the
boycott and said that it was unfair to students.
Higher Education
Commission (HEC) executive director Dr Sohail H Naqvi said on
Wednesday that FAPUASA was spoiling the educational environment on
campuses.
He said the HEC had upgraded PhD teachers and only non-PhD
teachers remained to be promoted. He said FAPUASA was wasting students' time for
its own benefit. Dr Naqvi also said the HEC had framed a committee to listen to
FAPUASA, but it had been changing its demands in every meeting.
FAPUASA
president Dr Mumtaz Ahmed Salik said universities in the city were not a part of
FAPUASA, except for the University of Engineering and Technology (UET). He said,
"The boycott was successful in other parts of the province."
He said
that if FAPUASA's demands were not fulfilled it would again protest in October.
He said FAPUASA officials would meet HEC officials on September 21, in Islamabad
to talk about the teachers' demands. Daily Times
