Student-teacher marriages becoming common
Lahore: Student-teacher marriages are a common phenomenon at our
educational institutions, especially universities.
The Punjab University
is one such where there are teachers who married their own students or the
students of the other departments. According to the data collected,
the number of such marriages is around a dozen in this prestigious university of
the country.
Apart from universities, the teacher-student marriages took
place at different academies and tuition centers. Unlike universities, at these
institutions, however, most the cases do come in the limelight because of the
limited number of students and teachers.
A number
of students expressed their displeasure over the issue saying they were not in
favor of teacher-student relationship. Most of them were of the view that
teachers should not have relationships with their own students as they were in a
position of power and authority, adding in such situations one cannot rule out
favoritism which affects performance of the other students.
However,
some students also spoke in the favor of teacher-student marriage saying there
was no harm after all marriage was a religious duty and a moral safe guard. They
said marriage between a teacher and a student is not forbidden.
Azeem, a
PU student, says he is against teacher-student marriage because relationship
between the two is very sacred. "Students do get impressed by their teachers",
he says adding "However one should not exploit such a situation and take undue
advantage".
"For me, this is a clear example of exploitation", he said
adding "There have been such marriages when a teacher got married to a student
much younger than him." He says it is also wrong on the part of students get
"trapped".
A special relationship between a student and a teacher
promotes favoritism.
Fahad, also a student, says a teacher should not
develop a special relationship with any student. "Before marriage, this
certainly leads to favoritism when the student appears in tests or exams", he
adds. A teacher is supposed to be a role model, he says, adding that he must set
a good example for his students".
Zafar, another student, says no one can
force someone for marriage. He says matrimonial relationship between students
and teachers can not develop without the consent of the both. "In most of the
cases, this also involves family consent", he adds.
Commenting over the
issue a senior PU teacher, seeking anonymity, says most of the teachers are also
against teacher-student marriages. A teacher is supposed to teach his students
with honesty and fairness and not "fall in love" with any one of them as it can
lead to injustice with duty and responsibility, he says.
He says our
religion gives great importance to the significance of a teacher, adding in
Islam a teacher is a spiritual father. "Teacher-student marriages do disgrace
teaching community", he adds.
A female student says a love story between
a teacher and a student is highly unethical, adding such cases hurt the feelings
of parents as well. "They (parents) send their children to universities and
academies to seek knowledge", she says adding "However, they find themselves in
a predicament when their daughter insists to marry their own
teacher".
"All this leads to disorder in our society", she maintains. The
government should introduce policy to discourage such practices, she says,
quoting the example of US states where such practices are rendered illegal.
