Punjab University associations' anti-VC pamphlets
PU associations distributing anti-VC pamphlets
Lahore, Sep 11: The Punjab University Academic Staff Association
(PUASA) and the PU Administrative and Technical Staff Association on Wednesday
distributed anti-vice-chancellor pamphlets among teachers and
students.
They also accused PU VC Dr Mujahid Kamran of sacking PU
teachers on false charges of plagiarism. PUASA President Dr Mumtaz Salik said
that teachers and employees of the university were against the VC's policies.
PUASA started distributing the pamphlets soon after the VC sacked five
PU teachers on plagiarism charges. This week, the technical staff association
also distributed pamphlets against the VC.
In February, the then
governor, Khalid Maqbool, retired former PU Centre for High Energy Physics
director Dr Fazle Aleem along with four other teachers of the same department –
Rashid Ahmad, Sohail Afzal Tahir, M Aslam Saeed and Maqsood Ahmad – for
plagiarism.
Dictatorial behaviour: According to the pamphlets, the VC
was harassing teachers and employees. It claims that the VC had appointed 17
people without advertising their jobs.
Salik said that they were
protesting against the "dictatorial behaviour" of the VC. He said, "A few days
ago, the PU syndicate members denied the option to sit with the VC in a meeting.
Later, four of the 16 syndicate members attended the meeting."
On
condition of anonymity, a technical staff association member said, "The VC made
new appointments in violation of the University Act. The VC had threatened PU
deputy registrar (admin 2) Muhammad Munir Chughtai with suspension from service,
due to which he died on August 6."
Allegations: PU Registrar Dr Naeem
Khan, while rejecting the allegations against the VC, said that the VC had given
a much-needed boost to the university.
A PU teacher said, "The
university's situation is going from bad to worse, as there are a lot of issues
that need the VC's attention."
