UHS medical entrance test | PU MBBS exam shedule
Private colleges to resist UHS entrance test
| Lahore, Sep 05, 2008: The private medical colleges have joined hands against
the government's decision to make it mandatory for the candidates to take
entrance test being conducted by the University of Health Sciences for admission
to all public and private medical and dental institutions in Punjab. A
meeting of representatives of the private medical and dental colleges in the
province was held here in this connection at the FMH College of Medicine and
Dentistry on Thursday. |
|
The participants strongly recommended that the UHS
entrance test should be applicable only to the public sector institutions in the
province while the private ones should be allowed to continue with their
admission process including entrance test as per guidelines of the Pakistan
Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).
"The private medical and dental
colleges of the province should have due representation in the bodies at all
levels of policy making with regard to medical education and health service
delivery system," said a representative.
The provincial government's
decision to hold entrance test under the UHS is aimed at regulating the affairs
of private medical and dental colleges.
The candidates with 65 per cent
marks in the FSc are eligible for the entrance test 2008-09. Earlier, the
private medical colleges used to offer admission to the candidates having even
less than 60 per cent marks.
A UHS spokesman said that the varsity
was bound to implement the chief minister's directive to hold the entrance test
for admission to all public as well as private medical and dental colleges in
Punjab.
There are eight private medical and dental colleges in Punjab:
Lahore Medical and Dental College, Lahore, FMH College of Medicine and
Dentistry, Lahore, Lahore University College of Medicine and Dentistry,
Independent Medical College Faisalabad, Faisalabad Medical College, Faisalabad,
CMH Medical College, Lahore, Wah Medical College, Wah Cantt and Margalla
Institute of Health Sciences, Rawalpindi.
All of them are recognised by
the PMDC and affiliated with the UHS. "If these institutions are affiliated with
the UHS then they should have no objection on the entrance test conducted by the
varsity," the UHS spokesman maintained.
On the other hand, the Punjab
government has decided to appoint provincial secretaries in all 12 centres
proposed for the entrance test in the province as superintendents. On the two
centers in Lahore, health and home secretaries will be the
superintendents.
The UHS has received over 15,000 applications for the
test against 2,156 MBBS and 157 BDS seats in all public medical and dental
institutions in the province. Dawn

LHC allows 11 GCU students to continue studies
Lahore: Justice Hafiz Tariq Nasim of the Lahore High Court (LHC)
on Thursday declared illegal an order of the Government College University
(GCU), asking 11 PhD students to pass GRE (Graduate Record Examination) test
before continuing their studies.
The petitioners, including Usman Hashmi
and Naveed Aslam, submitted that they obtained admission for a four-year PhD
programme on December 28, 2003.
They said that when they passed the
third year of their course, the university awarded them result cards that
referred to their degree as M Phil/PhD instead of only PhD and also asked them
to take the GRE test.
The students said that the university took a plea
that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) had changed its rules so they had to
clear GRE test before proceeding with their studies. The petitioners pleaded
that the rules promulgated after their admissions could not be applicable on
them. Justice Hafiz Tariq Nasim, allowing the petitioners to continue their PhD
programme, ordered the GCU authorities not to ask them to appear in GRE test. Daily Times

Ex-BoP chief appointed PPSC chairman
Lahore: The Governor's House on Thursday approved the recommendation from
the Chief Minister Secretariat to appoint former chairman of the Bank of Punjab
Shahzad Hasan Pervaiz as the Punjab Public Service Commission chairman on
officiating basis, dispelling the impression that it had any rift with the
latter on vital administrative issues.
The post of the PPSC chairman had
been vacant for over one and a half months and now the Punjab government has
again appointed an officer as its chairman on a temporary basis. The Governorís
House is said to have moved a summary to the CM Secretariat for the appointment
of a new chairman immediately after the retirement of outgoing chairman Tariq
Sultan most probably on July 22. They are attributing delay in the appointment
of a new chairman to the CM Secretariat.
It is further learnt that
Punjab Governor Salman Taseer had reservations over the appointment of a
comparatively junior officer Shahzad Hasan Pervaiz as the PPSC chairman on
officiating basis. Shahzad Hasan Pervaiz is picked by the CM Secretariat down
the list as he is on the eighth number in the seniority list of the PPSC. The
sources stated the governor wanted to appoint the most senior officer as the on
permanent basis. Nevertheless, he approved the summary to avoid any further
controversy with the CM Secretariat which could affect the functioning of the
PPSC and cause inconvenience for the public.
Shahzad Hasan Pervaiz
joined the PPSC in November 2007, immediately after leaving the office of scam
hit Bank of Punjab as its chairman. He was appointed the Bank of Punjab chairman
by ex-CM Ch Pervaiz Elahi and held the office for three years. After he left the
BoP, it faced severe crisis owing to the financial misappropriations.
The insiders attribute his appointment as the PPSC chairman despite
being down in the seniority list because of the Kashmiri network which brought
him close to Sharifs.
It is also learnt that incumbent senior member of
the Board of Revenue Syed Safdar Javed, who is in grade-22 and nearing his
retirement, is eyeing the post on permanent basis. Safdar Javed, who belongs to
the first common and is the most senior officer in Punjab, has been working at
the post of SMBR for the last five years.
Earlier, the official circles
were attributing the delay in the appointment of the PPSC chairman due to
ongoing tussle between the Governorís House and the Chief Minister Secretariat.
Nevertheless, the Governorís House has dispelled the impression stating
that they had sent a requisition to the CM Secretariat one and a half month
back. They said they had received summary pertaining to the appointment of the
PPSC chairman four days back and the governor had signed it on Thursday.
When contacted, Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr Taqueer said the CM
Secretariat had sent recommendation to the Governorís House four days back. He
said they had decided to appoint an officer as the PPSC chairman on officiating
basis because they could not find appropriate officer against the post on
permanent basis. However, he denied to name the officer to be appointed as the
chairman saying it was confidential. The News
