Teachers up against 'MNA-led rowdyism'
Islamabad: Teachers of the Government Boys College F-10/4 have
announced that they will observe a token strike against alleged
rowdyism by a group led by PML-N MNA Anjum Aqeel Khan at the college on
Wednesday. Professor Qasim Masood, President of Federal College Teachers
Association, alleged that the armed group stormed into the college and
roughed up Professor Laiq Ali Khan after a candidate recommended by the
MNA was refused admission. "We have called for a token strike and will also stage protest against the incident," said Prof Masood.
Prof Gul Mohammad Swati, head of the admission committee, alleged that
professors present in the college were attacked by the group. "The PML-N legislator threw a shoe at Prof Laiq Ali Khan and also used
foul language against the educationists besides trying to thrash the
professor. However, we resisted his action," he alleged. "It is very sad and tragic to see the way a PML-N legislator behaved and treated the professors," he said.
Several head boys were also present during the incident in which MNA
Anjum Aqeel allegedly manhandled Prof Laiq along with his 12
supporters. "I was abused by the legislator in the
principal's room while my colleagues rescued me from his supporters who
were armed with weapons," Prof Laiq said. He said the attackers smashed the glass door of the staff room "and harassed my colleagues", he said.
"We have registered our complaint with the Shalimar police and narrated
the incident in the application. The police have assured us that they
will initiate action against the culprits," he added. He said
the student recommended by the PML-N MNA was not eligible for admission
to 11th class in arts group because he had secured only 42 per cent
marks in 10th class against the minimum requirement of 45 per cent
marks as per policy. MNA Anjum Aqeel told media persons at
the National Press Club later that he had reached the college to help a
student of his constituency who was not being entertained by the
college administration but was not involved in the incident. "I had contacted the principal several times to plead the poor
student's case who belonged to the Shah Allah Ditta village near Golra
Sharif but the management was not entertaining him." He said when he entered the college he was accompanied with only one guard and none other.
The MNA said he was not aware of the merit criteria of the college but
had gone there to help out the student who had allegedly been
manhandled by the college administration. It may be recalled
that earlier a PML-N MNA was removed from the party membership on the
charge of involvement in a fake examination case while a female MPA was
forced to resign after being allegedly involved in a credit card theft. Dawn
