Errors mar CAP college admission process
Karachi: With the completion of admission process under the
centralised policy, a number of errors surfaced such as placement of
commerce and computer science students in arts (humanities) and
engineering colleges and an uneven award of admissions to different
colleges. In addition, about 19,200 students have been
admitted to the commerce faculty of various colleges despite the fact
that there is already an acute shortage of commerce subject teachers,
sources said. Similarly, a large number of students had been
placed in computer science faculty this year though many of the
colleges were without subject teachers and well-equipped laboratories.
Confirming that the Sindh education department's centralised admission
policy (CAP) committee had placed thousands of commerce students in
humanities group, while hundreds of others who did their matriculation
with computer science had been given admissions in engineering
colleges, Prof Iftikhar Azmi of the Sindh Professors and Lecturers
Association's Karachi chapter said that such anomalies had occurred
because the placement forms were not segregated faculty-wise prior to
their scrutiny. Prof Azmi was appointed an observer to the admission
process. Asked if it was lawful to give admissions to the
faculties than those desired by the candidates, Prof Azmi replied in
the negative, saying that all those students who were denied admissions
to the faculty of their choice despite having required marks in the
faculty in matriculation might approach the court of law to seek
justice. He was of the view that a number of other errors
which may surface over the next couple of days could result in heavy
rush of students at all 19 claim centres set up by the CAP committee to
address such complaints. He attributed the causes of problems
which generally crop up during the computerised admission process to
non-availability of proper system of registration and scrutiny of
placement forms, lack of data on the capacity of colleges and absence
of an effective system to verify marks-sheets issued by boards of
secondary education other than the Karachi board. The sources
said that these shortcomings would cause overcrowding in the colleges
of repute, mostly located in the city's centre, and leave those in the
suburbs deserted. As a result many colleges located in the
suburbs would get little attention of the authorities concerned and
fail to perform well in the intermediate examinations. They
said if the government failed to overcome the lingering issues
concerning shortage of teachers and ill-equipped science and computer
science laboratories, the colleges' performance in the intermediate
examinations might deteriorate. Sources in government
colleges said that the colleges would take at least a few more days to
complete procedural formalities although the CAP committee had
completed the process by giving admissions to over 82,000 candidates to
the 124 colleges. This way first-year classes in a majority
of the colleges would begin in the first week of October, they added. Meanwhile,
the Centralised Admission Policy (CAP) committee has allowed the
principals of 37 government colleges in the city to grant admissions to
eligible students in Class XI on their discretion on a merit basis
subject to availability of seats, APP adds. The announcement
to this effect was made by the directorate of colleges. Dawn

Dow University of Health Sciences principal's condition stable
Karachi: Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Principal Dr Salahuddin Afsar
condition is now stable condition, his family members said. Afsar
was shot at yesterday night, when he attacked by two assassins riding a
motorbike outside his clinic in North Nazimabad. The doctor sustained a
wound above the hip bone, and was immediately rushed to Aga Khan
University Hospital's private wing. The wing where Afsar is being
treated is being heavily guarded, while his family also turned down a number of media interviews. Relenting
a bit, his wife expressed her surprise over why Afsar was targeted.
"He's not politically affiliated or a part of any such thing, so I fail
to understand why anybody would want to harm him," she said. She
said that her husband was a soft spoken man, who had never been
embroiled in any controversy. She also refuted talk of sectarian
violence, saying: "As I said before, my husband has never been harsh to
anyone let alone being involved in such a thing. On Monday night Armed men made an attempt on the life of Dow
Medical College Pro-Vice Chancellor Salahuddin Asfar in the North
Nazimabad police limits late. Police said that
Asfar, a resident of Phase-VI, DHA, was returning home from Remedial
Hospital in North Nazimabad, when armed men opened fire and escaped. He
sustained a bullet wound. Prof. Asfar was shifted to the
hospital, where his condition is now reported to be stable. In his
statement, he said that he had no enmity with anyone. A case
has been registered and investigation is under way. Attack
on Prof. Afsar condemned: Faculty members at a meeting at the Dow
University of Health Sciences (DUHS) condemned the brutal attack on
Professor Salahuddin Afsar, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the
Dow Medical College. The faculty members demanded of the Sindh
government that a judicial inquiry into the matter is conducted, and
the culprits are punished. They said that there was a need to provide
security to medical and para-medical professionals, as they were
"custodians of health of society". Faculty members also prayed
for the speedy recovery of Prof. Afsar. Meanwhile,
DUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr Masood Hameed Khan said in a press release that
the attack on Afsar was aimed at depressing the doctors' community, and
appealed to the government and law-enforcing agencies to provide
security to the medical professionals. The news
