PU extends BA/ BSc registration date
Lahore, Sep 03: The Punjab University has extended the last date for registration of private candidates for BA/BSc Annual Examination 2010 up to September 15 with double fee (Rs 3200).

The candidates, who have passed the Intermediate (FA/FSc) Annual Examination in 2008 and before, are eligible for registration while candidates, passing Intermediate Exam in Supplementary Examination 2008, will have to attach attested photocopy of their failed result card of Annual Exam 2008.

The registration forms can be obtained from PU Information Centre, New Campus, University Sales Depot, Old Campus, and nominated branches of Habib Bank on depositing Rs 15.

The registration form can also be downloaded from the university website www.pu.edu.pk.

The registration form, attested from gazetted officer, can be submitted along with academic documents (including Matric and Intermediate), National Identity Card, one recent photograph and original bank receipt.

Candidates who had passed their Intermediate other than Lahore, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Faisalabad and Federal Boards must attach original No Objection Certificate (NOC) obtained from their relevant boards.

Candidates, having passed O or A level exam, should attach Equivalence Certificates obtained from Inter Boards Chairman Committee (IBCC). He further said the candidates must write down their own addresses on the form and not to mention the addresses of private colleges, academies or any friend/relative and all such forms would be rejected.

Complete forms in every aspect can be submitted during the office timings (8:30 am to 2:30 pm) in Registration Branch, Room No. 25, Administration Block, Punjab University, New Campus, Lahore or sent through registered mail on the above said address. No form receiving after due date (September 15) will be entertained.

Linkages between PU, Chinese varsities discussed
Lahore: On a directive by the Punjab governor who is also chancellor of the Punjab University, a meeting was held in the PU to chalk-out the way forward for establishing academic linkages with Chinese higher education institutions on Wednesday.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran presided over the meeting, which was also attended by CEO Punjab China Bureau Zafaruddin Mahmood, PU External Linkages Director Maria Maldonado, Col (Retd) Muhammad Ikramullah Khan, Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Mazhar, Prof Dr Khawaja Zakriya and Dr Sajid Ali.

A press release said that the PU VC and administration were much interested in internationalisation of PU. Since higher education was cheaper in China, PU was encouraging young faculty members to do PhDs from China in science, technology and other disciplines.

He said PU had a faculty development programme under which teachers were being encouraged to do PhD from Chinese varsities because we have strong ties with China and also education was cheaper there as compared to US and European universities. Dr Mujahid Kamran said PU would also activate dormant MoUs and agreements with Chinese varsities.

The CEO Punjab China Bureau said that despite strong and time-tested friendship between Pakistan and China, there was hardly any concrete academic collaboration between the higher education institutions of both countries. He said a students' exchange programme should be launched.

Oriental College Principal Dr Mazhar Moen said their college's Urdu Department had linkage with Peking University Department of Urdu and their head of the department was a graduate of their college. He said four years ago they started diploma classes in Chinese language and last year 35 students were registered in this programme.

He suggested setting up of a department of Chinese language in the Oriental College. Chairman Philosophy Department Dr Sajid Ali suggested setting up of Chinese Study Centre in Punjab University with the help of the provincial and federal governments.

PPSC exam from 3rd
Lahore: Examination for recruitment to the posts of Planning Officer in Health Department, Documentation Officer in Board of Revenue Department, Assistant District Attorney in the Law, Parliamentary Affairs & Human Rights Department and Auditor in the Finance Department will be held from 03.09.2009 to 10.09.2009 by the Punjab Public Service Commission at the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Centre, 49-A, Lawrence Road, Lahore.

District Nazim Lahore, under Section 144, has ordered that no person other than the bona fide candidates of the aforesaid examination shall enter in an area of 100 yards around the examination center of the said examination. Similarly, no person shall make demonstration of any sort in the said area. This order shall remain in force in Lahore district from 03.09.2009 to 10.09.2009.

Recommended for appointment
Lahore: The Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC), through a notification on Wednesday, recommended five candidates for appointment to the posts of District Officer (BS-18) in the Water Management Wing of Punjab Agriculture Department.

The candidates are Javaid Iqbal, Arshad Ajmad, Habibullah Habib, Asif Iqbal and Muhammad Iqbal. Through a separate notification, PPSC also recommended three candidates Rafiq Ismail, Jahangir Ali and Sajid Zafar for appointment to the posts of Assistant Accounts Officer/Audit Officer (BS-16) in the Punjab Auqaf Organisation. Through another separate notification, PPSC also recommended a candidate Naveed Ahmad for appointment to the post of Audit Officer (BS-17) in the Zakat and Ushr Department. The news

Law college lecturer's eviction disallowed
Lahore: Governor Salmaan Taseer has granted status quo in favour of Punjab University Law College lecturer Ms Khujista Rehan against her eviction from hostel accommodation. The eviction was ordered by the university administration.

Ms Khujista, who was superintendent of PU Girls Hostel No 9, had a clash with hostel warden Dr Farah Kanwal on July 10. Dr Kanwal had alleged that the superintendent physically attacked her. The superintendent, however, claimed that the warden was victimising her at the behest of vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran.

As the issue grew serious, the Punjab University administration, on the application of a hostel clerk, got an FIR registered against Ms Khujista under sections 506 (life threats) and 186 (obstructing official work). Ms Khujista had to obtain bail to avoid arrest as the police raided the hostel and even the residence of her mother.

The university administration had removed Ms Khujista from the post of hostel superintendent on June 17 on the recommendation of the Hall Council chairman based on an ex-parte decision by an inquiry committee which was constituted to probe why she (Ms Khujista) broke the double lock put up by the hostel warden on the room of a former varsity teacher. She was also asked to vacate the hostel residence.

In a queer move meanwhile, the Punjab governor/chancellor has appointed University of Health Sciences Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Malik Husain Mubashar to probe the matter and furnish him with report/recommendations on a priority.

Senior Punjab University academics have taken the probe by an outsider as a matter of governor's distrust on PU faculty members. "Did the governor fail to find any senior official in the Punjab University to conduct an impartial inquiry into a minor incident and recommend him a solution," they wondered.

The Punjab University Academic Staff Association had immediately written a letter (on June 17) to the vice-chancellor about the removal of Ms Khujista, stating that it was basically a clash between two colleagues of the University Law College which began long before Prof Kamran assumed the charge.

PUASA president Prof Dr Saeed Ahmad Nagra and secretary Prof Dr Zaid Mahmood also stated: "As you took over as VC, both the women made their way into the administration of new girls' hostels. With the passage of time, one of them became Law College in-charge and then took over the power centre of the university. This pushed Ms Khujista Rehan against the wall and her reaction provided the ground to the administration to institute a number of inquiries against her."

The PUASA leaders had suggested the VC that "it should have been much better, if you could delay your action till the outcome of inquiries constituted against her. In this regard maintenance of impartiality is primarily VC's responsibility," they added.

They also said the VC should have listened to the grievances of Ms Khujista. "Higher positions need bigger hearts to accommodate the errors and correct them. It will be appreciated, if you can reconsider your decision of Ms Khujista's removal from the superintendentship," they said. Dawn

PUCIT excels in job-oriented education
Lahore: The interest shown in the job-oriented computer science education particularly at the Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT) is evident from the fact that as many as 40401 candidates applied for admission of which 4245 appeared in the entry test for 4-years BS (Hons) programmes in the semester 2009-10 against 330 seats.

The college provides BS (Hons) in three disciplines viz Computer Science, IT and Software Engineering in the morning and afternoon sessions. The last merit list showed 69.67 per cent marks for admission. This percentage of merit increased as compared to last year that was 67.21 in BS- SE, 68.58 in BS-CS and 67.54 in BS-IT.

In the two disciplines of MSc, Geographical Information Service (GIS) and IT, as many as 1099 candidates applied for admission against 220 seats in the morning and afternoon sessions of which 991 students appeared. The merit showed 62.98 per cent, also highest than the last year.

In the MS, MPhil programme, 127 candidates applied for admission of which 115 appeared for entry test against 15 seats. In the PhD programme, ten applied and nine appeared of which only one has qualified.

The first merit list was displayed on August 29 and the last merit list was displayed on August 31st and the admissions were swiftly completing.

The PUCIT has introduced PhD programme for the first time this year to which the MPhil pass students of the same college will move over to 10 seats of PhD, while the entry test was open for aspirants outside the college of which only one qualified.

There are five PhD teachers already working in the prestigious constituent college of the University. Set up in 2002, the College has earned repute in IT education at graduate and postgraduate level. As such it attracted highest number of candidates than any other University or institution in the IT education.

The PUCIT Principal Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar said the College has become major IT professional producing institution to meet the ever-increasing need of PhD faculty in computer science and IT. The most talented students with higher merit in Intermediate opt for BS (Hons) 4 years programme. The MS, MPhil 18 years education leading to PhD in Computer Science is also an ambitious programme to produce highly professional manpower in IT and computer science for teaching as well service to software houses.
