PU Registrar exit raises eyebrows
Lahore: The abrupt removal of Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan from the office of the Punjab University (PU) Registrar has raised the eyebrows not only within the varsity but also in the academic circles.

Dr Khan was removed from the office surprisingly in the afternoon, as in the morning, he performed his official duties as per routine.

Another abrupt reshuffling witnessed the same day was that of the post of Chairman Hall Council for which PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran directed Prof Dr Amin Athar to take over the charge with immediate effect in place of Prof Dr Muhammad Akhtar who was posted as new Registrar. According to the notification, Dr Muhammad Akhtar, Chairman of Zoology Department, took over the charge as Registrar with effect from 22-09-2010 (Afternoon) and started performing his official duties.

The abrupt move has surprised the entire teaching and non-teaching community of the Punjab University (PU), as Dr Naeem Khan was considered as a good administrator. The move has also prompted speculation that something is going to change in the PU in the coming days as well while there are also rumours about the change of top manager of the university. However, officials denied any such possibility.

PU VC Dr Mujahid Kamran was not available for comments. Dr Naeem Khan, when contacted, said he was happy that he performed duties and served the university in administrative capacity with honour and dignity. He also dismissed the rumours and said he was thankful to his colleagues and his staff who supported him during his tenure as PU Registrar.

Polytechnic college without electricity
Taxila: The first government polytechnic college of the Rawalpindi district constructed recently on Taxila-Hattar road has commenced academic session but without electricity thanks to bureaucratic and indifferent attitude of the Wapda authorities.

Over 300 students enrolled in five different technologies in three years diploma in associate engineer (DAE) programme including chemical, mechanical, civil, telecommunication and electrical.

The institute administration has deposited a sum of Rs3.2 million as demand note for installation of four transformers and provision of electricity to the institute.

The project was the brainchild of former federal minister for labor and manpower, Ghulam Sarwar Khan and the site was selected at Taxila as the city was the hub of defense and private industries.

A huge piece of land of 96 canal was acquired from the Ministry of Industries and the project was inaugurated by former President General Pervez Musharraf on April 7, 2007.

Principal of the institute Mustansar Tariq Aziz confirmed that the college administration had deposited Rs3.2 million in Wapda's account for installation of four transformers and provision of electricity.

Sub-divisional officer (operations) Shah Nawaz told this reporter that money was wrongly deposited in another account.

He said that after the amount credited to the account of the circle, Wapda would install four transformers and supply electricity to the college. Dawn
