NCA Rawalpindi getting new performing arts dept

Lahore, 24, Sep : The National College of Arts (NCA) would start a performing arts department at its Rawalpindi campus in collaboration with the Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA), NCA sources informed on Saturday.Sources said that PNCA had also given its 800-seat Liaqat Memorial Hall, fully equipped with backstage facilities, to the NCA for the its upcoming students. They said that the NCA would spend around Rs 20 million on the department out of a total of Rs 400 million allocated to the college’s Rawalpindi campus. Federal Railway Minister Sheikh Rashid also donated a building near the campus for the department. Sources said that the government would also give a 20-acre piece of land in Rawalpindi to the NCA to build a hostel for the campus and other buildings. The Performing Arts Department will have three sub-departments, Department of Theatre, Department of Drama and Department of Dance. Admissions will open in January for the 4- year degree programme in performing arts. Sources said that the department would be inaugurated with performances based on Sadaat Hasan Manto’s stories. Under the department, a puppet theatre programme would also be initiated in collaboration with the PNCA and it would involve a number of puppeteers from Islamabad and Lahore. The NCA authorities have been contacting a number of people from Pakistan and abroad in performing arts to develop the faculty of the department and some of the people have been short-listed. A series of workshops on various aspects of performing arts have also been arranged with experts from abroad. NCA Principal Sajida Vandal said it was not an easy task to gather a team of competitive people for the new department. “I have contacted relevant people from Khyber to Karachi and from abroad to form a quality faculty for the department,” Vandal said.
