Spelling Bee contest kicks off today

KARACHI, Sept 10: The third “Dawn in Education -- National Spelling Bee” competition begins with its first round contest here on Monday.

As many as 1,754 students coming from 420 schools located in 28 cities across the country will participate in the event, comprising competitions at three levels for three age groups. The city final of the competitions will be held on September 23 when 27 students -- three winners from each age group from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad rounds -- will spell words.

The Karachi rounds of the national competitions will be held at the Bahria Auditorium, Karsaz, from September 11 to 18. The city final for Karachi region competitors will be held on September 18.

The break-up of Karachi round competitors is: 9-11 age group = 435 students, 12-14 age group = 438 students, and 15-17 age group = 414 students.

In the Lahore rounds, a total of 684 students from 100 schools will take part in the competition, which will be held from September 13 to 16 at Al-hamra Cultural Complex. The Lahore city finals will be held on September 16.

The break-up of Lahore round competitors is: 9-11 age group = 231 students, 12-14 age group = 255 students, and 15-17 age group =198.

Another 80 schools will be sending 585 competitors for Islamabad rounds which will be held at the Islamabad Club from September 21 to 23. The break-up of Islamabad round competitors is: 9-11 age group = 198 students, 12-14 age group = 210 students, and 15-17 age group = 177 students.

Islamabad will host the national final of the year. The Spelling Bee is supported by the British Council which constitutes the panel of judges and pronouncers for the competition, according to a coordinator of the programme.

Students of schools in Karachi, Hyderabad, Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Kasur, Gujrat, Jhang, Okara, Islamabad, Abbotabad, Peshawar, Azad Kashmir, D. I. Khan, Kahrian, Mangla, Muree, Lower Topa, Rawlakot, Risalpur, Sargodha, Kohat, Mianwali, Swat, Attock, Chakwal and Mardan have been registered for the event.
