Imperial College London
Imperial's founding charter was signed 100 years ago and it's been leading the way pretty much ever since in the teaching and study of all things sciencey. Not exclusively science any more, though - there's a business school and even a humanities programme these days. Imperial's reputation places it as one of the best academic institutions in the world. Unsurprisingly, competition for places is stiff and there is a certain grandeur about the institution that is only reinforced by its location among the pomp and circumstance of London's swankiest boroughs. Hyde Park, the V&A (or the Science Museum, which is probably more your thing if you're at Imperial) and the Albert Hall are all on your doorstep. Imperial College London
3,070 for all full-time undergraduate courses in 2007-08.

For students in receipt of a full grant, 2,765. For students in receipt of a partial grant, there are awards ranging from 105 to 1,750 depending on household income. Scholarships and further bursaries are also available.

First-year undergraduates are guaranteed a place in college accommodation. Prices start at 52 a week and can go up to around 150 for the swankiest rooms.
