Royal Academy of Music
Founded in 1822, the Royal Academy of Music is one of the oldest and most prestigious conservatoires (schools of music) in the UK.
It is based in upmarket Marylebone, central London - and musicians study for University of London degrees, in varying programmes of study including instrumental performance, composition, jazz, musical theatre and opera; and there are a huge range of orchestras and ensembles which give public performances, in spaces such as the 400-seat Dukes Hall.
The student community is international, with more than 50 countries represented; there is even an "English for musicians" course. Musicians who have studied at the academy include Lesley Garrett, Sir Elton John and Myleene Klass. |

Fees
Full-time undergraduates on the BMus course will pay £3,070 in 2007-08.
Bursaries
Means-tested bursaries are awarded to help students pay tuition fees; there are also "access to learning" funds for students struggling with living costs. Entrance scholarships are awarded on merit.
Accommodation
The academy cannot provide accommodation of its own, but students can apply for a place in one of the federal university's intercollegiate halls - such as International Students House, not far from the academy.
