University of Huddersfield
"To boldly go where no student has gone before." Declaim that on the Huddersfield city centre campus and you'll soon be pulled up on your split infinitives by a fellow student, or perhaps by the actor Patrick Stewart - the bald one off Star Trek - who is actively involved in the life of the university of which he is chancellor. Huddersfield is a pleasant town close to both Manchester and Leeds. The campus straddles the old canal and there's a new £4m student union building. A new creative arts building is planned for 2007, too, which will enhance its strengths in performing arts. Courses are modular and many offer the option of a year abroad or at least working in industry. University of Huddersfield
