St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland, and the third oldest in the English-speaking world, after Oxford and Cambridge. It shares some characteristics with its older siblings down south: a prestigious academic centre renowned for the quality of its teaching and research and a reputation for being a bit posh. Prince William did study here, after all, there's a high independent-school intake and a raft of arcane traditions. But St Andrews does have an active commitment to widening access to the university. It's certainly popular with applicants: 10 for every place at the last count. The location is something special - a small, historical town tucked up on the coast of north east Scotland. The university is a major part of life here and is fully integrated into the town. Despite the lack of cavernous nightclubs, there's plenty to do, and lots of student societies. And lest we forget, St Andrews is the home of golf. |

Fees
Scottish and EU students from outside the UK pay no tuition fees but may be liable for graduate endowment at end of course. For other UK students, 2007 tuition fee of £1,735 (£2,760 for medicine).
Bursaries
Subject-based scholarships awarded on academic merit and made in year of entry only, worth from £250-£1,000. Scholarships awarded on the basis of financial need for UK and EU students - from £500-£7,000 for each year of the course. There is also a bursary for talented golfers.
Accommodation
Guaranteed for eligible first years. Prices range from around £108 to £147 a week for catered accommodation, and from £53 to £113 a week for self-catering accommodation. The more expensive rooms are ensuite.
