PMDC registered 4,766 MBBS, 759 BDS doctors in 2007
Islamabad, Feb 01, 2008: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) registered 4,766 MBBS doctors
last year, 2,608 of them female and 2,158 male, according to official record
collected.
Similarly, 759 dentists were registered in the
same period, 515 female and 244 male. It is interesting that the number of
female doctors exceeded that of their male counterparts. The PMDC also
registered 1,086 medical specialists, 753 male and 333 female. Thirty-two dental
specialists, six female and 26 male, were also registered last year.
With
the fresh entries, the total number of MMBS doctors came to 127,893 in 2007 from
123,126 in 2006 and that of BDS doctors to 8,197 from 7,438.
Likewise,
the number of medical specialists increased to 19,990 in 2007 from 18,904 in
2006 and that of dental specialists to 442 from 410.
In Pakistan, MBBS
and BDS degree holders have to get themselves registered with the PMDC to start
practice. A PMDC official, wanting not to be named, said that many
doctors started practice without fulfilling the registration
requirement.
He said a number of doctors went abroad and a few hundreds
stopped practice for various reasons every year. He said private and government
medical and dental colleges offered admission to over 7,000 students a
year.
Provincial breakdown of registered doctors: According to PMDC
statistics, 2,218 (960 male and 1,258 female) MBBS doctors were registered in
Punjab; 1,556 (580 male and 976 female) in Sindh; 664 (425 male and 239 female)
in NWFP; 158 (87 male and 71 female) in Balochistan; 99 (56 male and 43 female)
in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and 71 (50 male and 21 female) were foreign degree
holders.
Similarly, 337 (107 male and 230 female) BDS doctors were
registered in Punjab; 267 (80 male and 187 female) in Sindh; 119 (40 male and 79
female) in NWFP; eight (three male and five female) in Balochistan; 17 (seven
male and 10 female) in AJK, while 11 (seven male and four female) held foreign
degrees.
The total number of registered MBBS doctors stands at 52,008
(32,697 male and 19,311 female) in Punjab; 53,101 (31,117 male and 21,984
female) in Sindh; 13,826 (9,994 male and 3,832 female) in NWFP; 3,969 (2,660
male and1309 female) in Balochistan and 2,247 (1,535 male and 712 female) in AJK
while the number of foreign degree holders is 2,742 (2125 male and 617
female).
The total number of BDS doctors stands at 3,224 (1,715 male and
1,509 female) in Punjab; 2,927 (1,270 male and 1,657 female) in Sindh; 1,272
(761 male and 511 female) in NWFP; 209 (149 male and 60 female) in Balochistan
and 206 (139 male and 67 female) in AJK and 359 (273 male and 86 female) hold
foreign dental graduation degrees.
Improving healthcare: The PMDC
official said the ratio between health facilities and the population had
improved over the years and so had the number of doctors, but the country was
still far behind the internationally accepted ratio of one doctor for 1,000
people.
He said one doctor was available for 1,310 patients at present,
suggesting more doctors were needed. He said the ratio of dentists was dismal as
there was one dentist for 25,107 people. Daily Times

"it has been observed that there are many doctors working in NGO sector who have fack documents taken from sindh medical college. by giving bribe to the head of departments and you people give them registration so please do not do this those people do what ever they want please check the registration of every doctor and pass a resolutaion that when ever a doctor is hired his documents will be verified. hope you will respond to it "

"aslam o alaikum i want to give give coment that the number of doctors are less as compared to patient the number of doctors are graduated same every year but patient are increasing day by day so i want to request PMDC to make colleges of optometry and orthoptics so it will help to reduce patient rate becoz in this matter we r quite back from india so plz make certain colleges and they must be recognized by PMDC and a few which r present should be recognized as pico in peshawar so more number of students should start joing it."
