Undergraduate Admission (B.S Program)

Admission Policy
The admission to the Institute is strictly on the basis of merit determined by its own admission test. There are no special quotas, reserved seats or admission by donations. Nor is there any arbitrary age limit for the applicants. In fact, the “Institute is open to all persons of either sex and of any religion, color, creed, class or domicile who are academically qualified for admission to the courses of study offered by the Institute, and no such person shall be denied the privileges of the Institute on the grounds only of sex, religion, colour, creed, race, class or domicile."

Eligibility
The applicants must have one of the following qualifications with an overall score of at least 60% excluding NCC (in case of a & b):
  1. F.Sc. (Pre-Engineering) or Polytechnic Diploma in Engineering from a Pakistani Board of Education.
  2. B.Sc. (Physics & Mathematics).
  3. Three A-levels (Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry/Computer Science) and seven O-levels (no `E’ or lower grade in Mathematics and Physics in A-levels).
  4. American or Canadian High School Diploma (Grade-12) with Calculus.
  5. International Baccalaureate with Calculus.
Note: Applicants having Computer Science/Computer Studies in lieu of Chemistry at their F.Sc./A-Level can apply only for Computer Software Engineering and Computer System Engineering.
Candidates may apply for provisional admission if they are awaiting their results.

Applicants who are provisionally admitted must ensure that their results are received in the Admission Office by the specified date mentioned in their admission offer; otherwise they will cease to exist on the roll of the institute. In such case there will be no refund of dues already paid.

Confirmation of all admissions will be subject to:
  1. Submission of medical certificate of fitness from the Medical Center of GIK Institute, and
  2. An undertaking by the student and his father/guardian to abide by the rules and regulations framed by the Institute from time to time.


Overseas Applicants
The eligibility requirements for the Overseas are the same as for the applicants from within Pakistan. They may however, take Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT-II) in Physics and Mathematics (Math IIC) in place of Institute's Admission test. Applicants have to choose only one i.e on the basis of their admission test or SAT-II, an option once exercised cannot be changed. The candidates filing two separate applications on two different basis for admission are liable to be disqualified.

Advance Standing Admission
A person who has been enrolled for a relevant Bachelor degree program in engineering at some accredited (PEC, HEC) institution and has earned 15 or more transferable credits with minimum CGPA of 2.5 on the scale 4, may apply to this Institute for admission with advance standing. However, the student at the GIK Institute to qualify for a bachelor degree must earn a minimum of 70 credits including 6 credits of senior design project. An applicant for transfer from a local or foreign institution is required to have passed the Institute’s admission test or SAT – II (overseas applicants) respectively by securing equal or more marks than the minimum merit of the faculty in which he/she seeks admission. However, acceptance of request for transfer will depend on availability of seat, and the quality of academic work already done by the applicant. Admission Test
Admission to the Bachelor Programs of the Institute is decided on the basis of candidates' score in the admission test, which comprises multiple choice questions based on Pakistani intermediate level Physics, Mathematics and English. A sample of such questions is provided along with the application form.

The test is held simultaneously at Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, Quetta and Karachi . The venue and general instructions for the test are intimated along with the dispatch of Admit Cards. Applicants can choose the test center according to their convenience. The results of the admission test are communicated to the selected candidates by post. Those applicants who do not receive the admit card one week prior to the test are advised to contact the Admission Office.

For the candidates applying on the basis of SAT-II, the merit will be determined by their Percentile score.

A former student of the Institute whose enrolment was cancelled due to unsatisfactory academic performance is also allowed to appear in the admission test. If selected, he/she will be enrolled in the first semester as a freshman and may not be given credit for the courses passed earlier. Any student who is currently on the roll of the Institute and wants to change the faculty is allowed to appear in the admission test. If selected he/she will not be given credits for the courses passed earlier.

Fee and Expenses
The Institute is a non-profit organization and provides subsidized education. The annual tuition fee (non-refundable), subject to revision from time to time, is as under for the 4 years for local residents and sons/daughters of expatriate Pakistanis.

  2. Academic year starting
    from Fall 2005 & 2006 Rs. 225,000/-
  3. Academic year starting
    from Fall 2007 Rs. 250,000/-
The annual tuition fee will be charge as per following rates from the foreigner students: -
  1. Academic year starting
    from Fall 2004 US $ 10,000/-
  2. Academic year starting
    from Fall 2005 & 2006 US $ 11,225/-
  3. Academic year starting
    from Fall 2007 US $ 12,600/-
The tuition fee is payable before the commencement of the Fall semester each year. A non-refundable admission fee of Rs. 15,000/- for Pakistani or US $ 650 for foreign applicants is also required to be deposited along with the annual tuition fee. Rs. 15,000 will be charged as security, refundable at the leaving the Institute subject to the clearance from relevant departments. The messing charges, to be paid every month, are based on the actual expenditure, which is approximately Rs. 2500 to 3000.
The fee charged per course offered during the summer semester is notified with announcement of the summer semester.
The final year students are charged convocation fee of Rs. 5000/-.

Financial Assistance
To provide opportunity for educational advancement to academically bright but financially needy students, the Institute provides financial assistance in form of interest-free loans subject to nominal administrative charges. It is available to a limited number of students on need-cum-merit basis as determined by the Institute. The assistance may be for a period of one to four years of studies.

If you are applying for financial assistance, you are required to download and fill the financial assistance form and forward the completed form along with a processing fee of Rs. 500.

Those who apply for financial assistance will be informed at the time of admission whether or not their request has been acceded to. An applicant who has secured admission on basis of merit but whose request for financial assistance is not approved, would be admitted on payment of full tuition fee.

Scholarships
Two students each holding N.W.F.P and Baluchistan domiciles are sponsored by the respective provincial government initially on the basis of merit cum need. The subsequent continuation of scholarship depends upon their satisfactory academic performance and according to the policies of the donor agencies at the Institute.

Female Students
The Institute encourages female students to join engineering profession. Because of revolutionary developments in the technological field, it is no more considered as an exclusively male domain, and offers a host of highly rewarding careers, which suit the special endowments of women. The Institute has taken measures to provide a very supportive milieu for the female students. It has a 120-seat girls hostel with all modern amenities, a ladies gym and a lady counselor to facilitate their stay on the campus.



Graduate Admission (M.S / PhD Programs)

Eligibility
The minimum requirements for the two-year MS program is a four-year BS (or equivalent), and for the three-year Ph.D program is an MS, (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, with sound academic background.

Financial Assistance
Some Graduate Assistantships sponsored by the Institute and other organizations are available in each discipline. In addition to full fee waiver, the Graduate Assistants will be paid a fixed stipend of Rs.5000/- per month and will be provided free bachelor accommodation.
