Balochistan University pro VC shot dead

QUETTA, April 23, 2008: Unidentified men shot dead the acting pro vice-chancellor of Balochistan University outside his Sariab Toad house on Tuesday, police said.

The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a banned Baloch separatist group, claimed responsibility for the killing.

Capital City Police Officer Muhammad Akbar said that Professor Dr Safdar Kiyani was taking a routine walk outside his house at about 7pm when unidentified men riding a motorcycle fired three shots at him, injuring his head and back. He died on the spot.

Kiyani, a Botany professor from Rahim Yar Khan, had been the university's dean of students' affairs and was expected to be appointed the new vice chancellor. A spokesman for the BLA, which has been engaged in the targeted killing of Punjabi-speaking professionals, telephoned newspaper offices and claimed responsibility for the professor's killing.
