HSC exams started
Karachi, Apr 27: All the arrangements have been completed for the HSC
annual examinations of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi
(BIEK) which will begin from April 27 (today). This was stated
by Chairman of BIEK, Prof. Anwar Ahmed Zai on Monday. All the admit
cards have been dispatched to the candidates.He pointed out that in the
metropolis these examinations would be conducted in two phases. In
the first phase starting from April 27 (today), the examinations of
Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical, Computer Science and Home Economics
groups would be organised. Prof. Zai said that the papers would be
conducted at 108 examination centres. As many as 108,000 candidates
would appear in these examinations. In all, 50 vigilance teams
have been formed that would include two vigilance officers each. The
second phase of the examinations would be conducted from June 1 and
some 144,000 candidates from Commerce and Humanities group both regular
and private candidates would appear at 120 examination centres. Meanwhile,
in view of the government's decision of five days working week, the
papers of Saturday - May 8 and 15 - would now be conducted on May 19
and May 20 respectively, the chairman of the BIEK added. 72
candidates' forms accepted for HSC exams: The Board of Intermediate
Education Karachi (BIEK) on Monday accepted the forms of 72 candidates
for the HSC Annual Examinations commencing from April 27.

Annual prize distribution at DHA College for Women
Karachi: The annual sports prize distribution ceremony was held at the Defence Authority College for Women Phase-VIII here on Monday. Muhammad
Fiaz Kidwai, Chairman Rotary Club for Pakistan and Afghanistan was the
chief guest. He also inaugurated the newly furbished college gymnasium.
Director Education DHA Brig (retd) Iftikhar Arshad Khan was also
present. The chief guest, Muhammad Faiz Kidwai, speaking on the
occasion stressed the significance of sports in development of an all
round healthy personality of an individual. He said that sports,
besides studies were essential for students to make them confident and
dynamic persons who could face the onslaught of life challenges
successfully. He also announced two special prizes for the
player and athlete of the year. Khushnum Karanjia of XII Commerce and
Marium of XII Science received the prizes respectively. He said sports
made an individual goal-oriented develop sportsman spirit and inculcate
moral and ethical values in a person. Brig (retd) Khan
appreciated the tireless efforts of the sports in charge and other
faculty members of the college for promoting sports in the college. He
emphasised on women empowerment both in academics and sports. He said
that co-curricular activities gave great self-confidence to the
students and proved to be significant in the process of personality
formation. He also announced a special prize for the sports department
of the college as a token of encouragement. A beautiful
presentation was also given by the students which highlighted the
sports achievement of the college. Earlier Prof. Nasreen Nisar,
Principal DA College for Women Phase-VIII, highlighted some of the
monumental achievement of the college both in curricular and
co-curricular activities.Prizes and awards were given to the young
sport girls who brought laurels to the college in various sports
events.

US varsity, KU may sign MoU
Karachi: We are willing to work on the details of signing MoU
with the University of Idaho, USA, to develop a vibrant collaborative
training programme, as it would result in skilled and trained manpower
in the important areas aquaculture engineering, fisheries, and
livestock which would have a direct impact on our economy and
agriculture, related to the enhancement of food productivity and food
safety. Acting Vice-Chancellor, Karachi University (KU), Prof.
Dr. Shahana Urooj Kazmi said this at a meeting with Prof. Dr. Gleyn E.
Bledsoe - University of Idaho, USA - who visited the KU on Monday. He
visited various departments and KU institutes and showed interest in
developing collaborative programmes with the Departments of
microbiology, food sciences & Technology, marine Biology, and the
Hussain Ebrahim Jamal Institute (HEJ). The main focus of his meeting
with the acting Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr.
Nasiruddin Khan was on developing collaboration between the University
of Idaho and KU to initiate various training programmes, sandwich PhD
programmes, and exchange of Post-graduate students and faculty members.

Teaching session extended at KU
The University of Karachi (KU) has extended teaching/classes of the first semester 2010 from May 8 to
May 10. An official of the KU said on Monday that the registrar of the
institution had issued the proceedings of a meeting of deans of the
faculties held under the convenorship of the acting vice-chancellor on
Monday. However, the semester examinations will be held from May 13 to
May 31, it was further announced.

Girls Guide unit formed at JUW
Karachi: A Girls Guide Unit has been formed at the Jinnah
University for Women (JUW). This was announced by a spokesperson of the
institution here on Monday. The unit, which is the first one at the
JUW, consisted of 32 students and is headed by Prof. Raana Hadi. Scout
Commissioner of Pakistan, Lt Gen (retd) Pervez Shahid was the chief
guest at the launching ceremony.Speaking on the occasion, he
appreciated the management of the JUW for initiating the Girls Guide
Unit at the institution. He also highlighted the significance of the
