Lahore: The Punjab University administration on Friday
distributed 35 laptops among professors and associate professors urging
them to utilise the latest technology for research in their respective

PUASA demands arrest of IJT ringleader
Lahore: Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) took out a
protest rally on Friday to press for the early arrest of the Islami
Jamiat Taliba (IJT) ringleader Usman Ashraf. Led by PUASA acting
President Professor Dr Abdul Ghaffar and PUASA General Secretary
Professor Javed Sami, the protesters demanded the arrest of Ashraf, who
had orchestrated the brutal attack on PU Disciplinary Committee head
Iftikhar Hussain Baloch. Faculty members participating in the protest
wore black gowns, badges and ribbons and carried placards and banners
inscribed with slogans against the IJT. They demanded the government to
ensure foolproof security arrangements on the campus for the
maintenance of a violence-free academic atmosphere and for the
restoration of teachers' honour. The protesters also decided that
during the coming week, they would convene a meeting of the PUASA
Executive Committee to chalk out the next line of action for organising
future protest rallies, until the authorities successfully arrested all
the culprits and their accomplices. Three accused IJT activists have
already been arrested, but the police have failed to capture the chief
accused, Usman Ashraf, who is also involved in number of other FIRs. Daily times

UHS BDS exams schedule
Lahore: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has notified
schedule for all professional BDS examinations in 2010 for its
affiliated dental colleges. A press release here on Friday said
first professional BDS annual exams 2010 would start on October 15,
second professional on October 25, third professional on November 1 and
final professional BDS annual exams will start on November 20. The
dental colleges affiliated with UHS include de'Montmorency College of
Dentistry Lahore, FMH College of Medicine & Dentistry Lahore,
Institute of Dentistry, CMH Medical College Lahore, Lahore Medical and
Dental College Lahore, Margalla Institute of Health Sciences Lahore,
Multan Medical and Dental College Multan, Nishtar Institute of
Dentistry Multan, Dental Section Punjab Medical College Faisalabad,
Sharif Medical and Dental College Lahore, College of Medicine &
Dentistry University of Lahore, and University Medical College
Faisalabad.

UHS directed to follow govt regularisation policy
Lahore: The Punjab government has directed University of Health
Sciences (UHS) and other autonomous institutions of the province to
deal the matter of appointment of their employees according to their
legal and statutory framework as per the notification issued by the
government on October 14, 2009, regarding the regularisation of grade 1
to 15 contract employees in the province. In a letter issued by
the Health Department, it was said in response to a summary regarding
services of employees of the UHS, the chief minister had directed that
the directions communicated vide Services and General Administration
Department's Notification No DS(O&M)5-3/2004/Contract (MF) dated
October 14, 2009 were not applicable to the employees of the UHS
appointed under the statutes of the university or for that matter any
other institution which was working as an autonomous body under its
legal and statutory framework. Moreover, it had also been directed
that since the provisions of notification of October 14 were only
applicable on those contract employees who had been appointed under the
provisions of Contract Appointment Policy-2004, therefore, its
provisions were not applicable on the contract employees of UHS. Earlier,
in February, on the request of UHS authorities, the Regulation Wing of
S&GAD had clarified that the terms and conditions of UHS employees
were to be determined by the university as provided under Section
4(xiii) of UHS Ordinance 2002. "In case appointments were made
under the provisions of rules/regulations/ statutes/laws of the
university and not as per Contract Appointment Policy-2004, the
university may proceed in accordance with its own
ordinance/rules/regulations/ statutes and exercise its discretion
provided therein", it said. The news

No politics in varsities, says Taseer
Bahawalpur: Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) Chancellor
Salmaan Taseer has warned students against any political activity in
educational institutions, says a press release issued by the university
on Thursday. Talking to IUB Vice-Chancellor Prof Belal A
Khan, Mr Taseer said educational institutions should be free from any
sort of political exploitation and extremism. The press release quoted
the governor as saying the Punjab government had agreed with him to
eliminate violence and politics from institutions. The
governor said he would instruct the district administration to clear
the IUB from such elements, who promoted violence and politics in the
university. He said a suitable decision would be taken on the appeals
of 12 students who were expelled from the IUB for disturbing the order. Dawn

City students participate in 'Recycling' exhibition
Lahore: Students from 50 public and private
sector schools including special education and EPD registered School
Environmental Clubs participated in the painting competition and exhibition on
"Recycling" organized by Environment Protection Department, Punjab and Children
Library Complex. Dr. Shagufta Shahjahan inaugurated the event and visited all
the stalls which are made by school children.25 schools including 18 registered
Schools are participating in this event. Children have made beautiful paintings
on recycling, clean and safe environment free pollution areas. The event has
target to make public specially youth awareness of the importance of the "Earth
day"; Identify the means & ways to move the "Green Generations" and to
highlight the importance of "Recycling" in reducing the volume of waste,
minimizing environmental problems and protection of environmental problems and
protection of environment to the children. The Environment Secretary Sajjad
Saleem Hotiana inaugurated the event today at children library complex. He
visited all the stalls made by children of various schools and encourage them
for making beautiful items on recycling. The Secretary said that the new
generation have the ability and stamina to understand the importance of clean
environment and they are doing outstanding work, in addition he said that the
Department is doing research on butterflies existing in city Lahore and two
three types of butterflies left in the city due to pollution so we all should
take steps including youth to make our environment clean so these beautiful
little birds should not dissapppear from our earth. In the end the Secretary
distributed the cash prizes and awards among the students and certificates to
all the schools who have participated in painting competition and exhibition.
Meanwhile, EPD and Children Library Complex celebrated 40th International Earth
Day across the city. Earth Day is a day designed to inspire awareness and
appreciation for the Earth's environment, EPD officials said adding this year's
theme of Earth Day is "Green Generation". In the United States, Earth Day is
celebrated each year on April 22 while the United Nations celebrates Earth Day
each year on the spring equinox, which is often 20 March. EPD officials said
this was a tradition, which was founded by peace activist John McConnell in
1969. The events organized in the city included a painting competition and
exhibition on recycling at Children Library by EPD, distribution of awareness
flyers by school children at Jail Road and various other seminars and workshops. F.P. Report
