Student political groups clash at KU
Student injured in clash at KU
Karachi, April 26: At least one student was injured on Wednesday in a clash between two
student political groups at Karachi University, over holding an event in
the arts lobby, university officials claim. "The Islami
Jamiat Talba was holding a debate in the arts lobby, when students from
the All Pakistan Mohajir Student Organization (APMSO) intervened. An
exchange of hot words and derogatory remarks against leaders resulted in
one student being beaten up," said Khalid Iraqi, campus adviser at the
institute. When contacted, Sohaib Ahmed, press secretary
of Islami Jamiat Talba, said the APMSO tried to spoil a programme that
their workers were holding in the lobby."There was a problem getting
permission from the university administration, and as a meeting about
the issue was in process, some workers from the other group intervened.
It was not a big deal, only a slight brawl." However, the
APMSO's information secretary claimed, "Our workers were trying to study
in a corner near the place where the event was taking place, when IJT
came and asked them to leave." He said the IJT was trying
to promote a brand of Islam in the country where individual freedom is
curtailed. "Four of our workers were injured in the scuffle."In the
past, a small event where student political groups fought, turned into a
series of clashes in educational institutes of the city, where armed
political activists injured and sometimes even killed other students. The news
