Ziauddin University's 9th convocation

307 students awarded degrees at Ziauddin University's convocation
Karachi, April 23: In a ceremony held on Saturday, around 307 graduate and post-graduate degrees were handed over to students of Ziauddin University's passing-out batch of 2011-12, while two position-holders clinched gold medals.

At the university's ninth convocation, Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza stressed the need to promote family medicine, urging medical students and practitioners to get involved in primary healthcare centres.

"Hospital training is too focussed on serious and complicated cases, where students don't get a chance to see the day-to-day health-related issues of families," she said.

Lauding the university's efforts for exposing students to primary healthcare initiatives, she said the initiative gave an opportunity to youngsters to get first-hand knowledge of the community's problems. Private sector's initiative to open up more medical colleges in the country has helped overcome the dearth of physicians.

"I am happy to see that the university expanding to nine programmes, after establishing creditable undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in medicine," Dr Mirza said, adding "most notable is the bachelors programme in speech language therapy, which is the only such course in Pakistan."

Earlier, Ziauddin University's Chancellor and Federal Minister for Petroleum Dr Asim Hussain said the institute had entered a new phase as a general university, after completing 17 years in medical education.

"The university is set to make a qualitative difference in higher education," said Dr Hussain.

"The institute's College of Pharmacy is to be shifted to a new 50 acre site at the Education City. Also, colleges of engineering, physical sciences and mathematics, social sciences and liberal arts and law, have been planned in different phases," he added.

While congratulating the young graduates, he advised them to gain knowledge, skills as well as honesty and good behaviour.

Javed Jabbar was also present on the occasion. In his inspirational speech, he encouraged the graduates to realise their responsibilities towards Pakistan. He said these graduates were amongst the fortunate few to have had access to higher education, and must strive for a knowledge-based society in Pakistan.

Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, vice chancellor of Ziauddin University, said the university was one of the top five institutes in the country in medical category, as per the latest ranking list issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

"The HEC has also categorised the university as having a W-4 rating, which is a top rating for any university in the country," he added.

He said the institute had recently set up its Institute of Communication and Media Studies to cater to the needs of the students with an interest in mass communications.

"With the establishment of Health TV and FM Radio, the students who join the institute will get hands-on training in the areas of TV and Radio, besides being trained in other modes of communication," the vice chancellor said.

A student of the Ziauddin University also shared his experiences while delivering a valedictory speech. The news
